Hi all, I am a newby on here and I am trying to find out any information on my Dads military service. I have obtained some of his service records between when he enlisted into the T.A in 1936 up until he was medically discharged from the Royal Engineers as a regular in 1945. He joined the regular Army in 1938 and joined the Hampshire Regiment and in 1941 transferred to C.M.P for a short time before joining No. 7 T.B.R.E. He was in the B.E.F and was rescued from Dunkirk which my Son found some Pathe news footage showing clearly my Dad marching through France with his unit. He was also part of the Mulberry Harbour construction team and was on Gold beach on D-Day as part of the Engineers. I believe Dad was injured in Caen from shrapnel injuries and was transferred to Mill Hill in North London. Dad sadly passed away in 1999 and did not like to talk about the War which I respected but my children now want to know about him so I will try to give them as accurate information as possible. Dads Army number was 859528 and he was also called Thomas Taskis as I am. Can anyone offer any advise please?

    Hello Thomas,

If he served with The Hampshire Regiment whilst with the BEF then he must have served with the 2nd Battalion.

    Best,

    Steve.

    Thomas, Welcome!

Can you scan and post his service records? Lots of details in there folks here can build on for you, and knowing the different reg'ts and the like he was in will make identifying which War Diaries are applicable for his units, and you'll be able to get a better picture of his units day to day activities.
Also some of the bits in the service record may not mean much to most of us but some of the Chaps on here can look at entries and say things like" If he was in XXX Btn on that date he was possibly involved in XXX battle" and other amazing tidbits of information.

Thomas, what I can tell you is he deployed overseas in France with the BEF at the beginning of the war, and his return to England on 3 - 6 - 1940 means he was most likely evacuated at Dunkirk, but you know that already.
Transferred to Traffic Control Corps, then posted to Corps of Military Police (CMP), then Hampshire regiment, then the TBRE, which may be Training Battalion Royal Engineers, the rank of Supr. (I think is Sapper, or equivalent to private in Royal Engineers) would then make sense.

That's all from me, someone else with more knowledge can help a bit more.
