My family have been trying to research my grandfathers involvement in the war since his death twenty years ago and had no real joy. He rarely spoke about it during his lifetime and only since his death have certain documents come to life that have increased our suspicions.

He was in the RAF between 1939 and 1941 and we know he escaped a German pow camp and was then recruited into special operations of some kind until he was demobbed in 1946. We know he had at least one alias name that he was operating under between 1941-1946 and a small list of operations that he claimed copyright on so they could not be published but very little else.

He was operating in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, China, Singapore and Malaysia but we have very little else to go on, where do we even start with trying to find out what he was involved with?

Devon, your grandfather most likely completed an Escape and Evasion report for MI9 after he had escaped. With a name we can check for you.
It is quite possible he could have been recruited into MI9/IS9 - I have reasonably full staff lists for them. Or he could have ended up in SOE. In which case there might be a personal file available for him.

Can you remember any of the operation code names as this might also give an insight into what he might have been doing?

Hi, we believe he was operating under the alias of Ernest Stephen Oliver w.o 1. The list of operations only gives the code name EMMASUSAN, the other info I have is a description of various missions which are somewhat vague.

No record of an Escape and Evasion record that l can find, nor any record of a POW record.

Any more info. Squadron, date of capture, etc.?

Devon, is his first name Ancel?
If you don't want to put his full name in public, send me a private message with it.

He was enrolled into the RAF under the Jack B*** name deleted from devon11's message and issued with a normal service number in the 1284*** series giving an attestation location of either Uxbridge/Gloucester or Penarth.

His service record will be collated under that service number.

Devon11 - use the freedownload from the The National Archives to look at the index card in AIR 78/24.

His service record will be available from disclosures at RAF Cranwell

    Regards

Thanks, will look into this further and hopefully get some more info. We have part of his record which has 38/4 WSF for 4 years on it and a reference to an additional file we need to request. Does anyone know what this means?
