Researching Douglas Roy Horder P/JX.263083 - Able Seaman

Discussion in 'Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy' started by EastUpperGooner, Nov 11, 2020.

  1. Good evening all, I'm researching my great great uncle Roy, he received the distinguished service medal 1945 Birthday Honours - Wikipedia as listed here. Going by some records I found online I believe he was aboard the HMS ML 293

I was curious as to if anyone could shed any light on his or the ships service during WW2, unlike WW1 there doesn't seem to be many documents available online.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome aboard. Others may come along and help. Always apply for his Service Record, even if the turnaround is reported as a year plus now. See: Get a copy of military service records Upload the records here once you've obtained them and then the forum can get to work on them.

Please do not pay for any site on the internet who promise you his service records they will not have them, and you would have wasted your money.

An example of what you get: Pte S Attley 14685855 4th Wilts Service Records | WW2Talk

Adding what you have already found can help, saves others from duplication.

I have noted the 'Other Ranks' rarely feature in Google searches unless they have been awarded gallantry medals or written their memoirs.

Searching Google will sometimes bring you back here, although just using Horder nowt for you was found. You must be agile and keep going.

War diaries can contain almost anything. At the very least, they give the daily movements and most important actions of every unit. They may also contain information on casualties, message logs, rolls of officers (but not O.R.'s), maps, orders, and much else. They are available at the PRO to everyone. Drew5233 and some others are willing to scan them for the benefit of those who cannot get to the National Archives at Kew.

It depends of course how much you want to know, just one battle or campaign for an example.

Please come back and tell us what you found. Scanning threads it is clear some discover the site years after your posts and add their information or request help. Good luck.

    Douglas Roy HORDER
    1911–2002
BIRTH 14 APR 1911 • Poole, Dorset, England
DEATH 12 MAR 2002 • Poole, Dorset, England

Name ML 293 | National Historic Ships
    HISTORY
ML 293 was built by the Dorset Yacht Company in 1941 at Hamworthy and worked as a Second World War motor launch. She joined the fifth flotilla and some of her exploits have been recorded in the book 'Inshore Heroes', notably her raid on the Radar Station in the Elaples area, when supportng the Special Services.
She was the first bowed vessel into Bologne harbour duing the liberation of France, nearly falling victim to the Army sharpshooters exploding mines periously close to her stern.
ML 293 was paid off in August 1945. Her name was changed to SOUTHERN PRINCESS, after conversion to be a pleasure boat off Great Yarmouth.
1949 found her leased to the Humber Conservancy Board, and she was now to be used as a survey vessel. As the E P HUTCHINSON, ML 293 played a role in the planning of the new Humber Bridge.
She was sold to Holland for a period, but not for long as the new owner could not meet his financial obligations and she was resold. Her return journey involved an underwater collision, which was repairable, but the cost of more modifications, financial problems and lack of attention resulted in ML 293 being classed as derelict and as such she remained a while in Bristol Dock.
Sold to Bob Morley, her restoraion to a Naval vessel commenced. After extensive work at Gloucester and Lydney, she returned to Bristol for the Naval Cadets. Under the command of Bob Baker, she served as a training vessel. The Midlands branch of the CFVA lent a hand by replacing her funnel with one more in keeping with her Fairmile shape. For three years she stayed in Bristol, until sold once again. Following on from this, she was berthed Hooe Lake, Plymouth, but was recorded as being disposed of in 2004.

Not so. This is an example of Army records. RN records are different as the Service Certificate was handed to the Rating on leaving the Service and no duplicate was kept. What you will get is an abstract from the Pay and Victualling ledgers.

  6. Thank you very much for your input everyone. I'll keep checking back this thread to see if anything else has been unearthed.

Yes, that ancestry file is one I have created. Thank you for this insight though. You've all been a great help :)

  7. I have come across this photograph which I believe to be of D R Horder and pals. They're reading The Daily Skelter! Can anyone confirm that these are members of the navy just by their uniform? Thanks again for your help. EUG
