    Hi All,

I have recently received my late fathers army records from WW11.

These have thrown up a whole new line of research with which I am struggling.

The info gives dates, locations, theatres of operation etc. but no detail.

My Dad told me that he was in North Africa, Palestine, Anzio, Casino, Naples Rome and then Germany. These are shown in the records as MEF, NAF, NWE but no detail.

However, he didn't mention that he was hospitalised in Belfast which shows in his records.

He was with the Somerset LI and the Northants.

I have tried the SLI Museum and have so far drawn a blank.

Can anyone give me guidance as to where I should be searching to establish my Dads' precise movements during the last war.

I would be most grateful for any assistance.

    Chris.

    Chris

    Do it the other way.

Do you know which division(s) he was in? Failing which, do you know which battalions of the Somerset LI and the Northants he was with?

    Tell us!!!

There is an Italian Campaign section here. Post all the details you have in there, plus any photos, certificates etc.

From what I have seen of this forum I am sure that someone will be able to help you.

I have found that the War Diaries of individual units to be of great use in locating movements of Regiments etc. These are usually at the Public Record Office, although I have found that Regimental museums have copies, some transcribed e.g Surrey County museum have full copies of and additional material of 131 Infantry Brigade Units and the tank museum at Bovington has many Armoured Units War Diaries (I have found "Google" searches to be very useful in locating repositories).
