Perhaps it's time again to encourage spreading the reps a little more?

I know that a few of us aren't that bothered about receiving them, but that's not the point. It's only because it's obvious from the 'blank' squares for newbies, that I've noticed some who could've deserved a rep are sitting on nothing. Folks are commenting on a thread which is great, but clearly not rep'ing.

Just keep it in mind next time you read something that makes makes a good impression, s'all ... it's not just for your best mates.

I agree with your comments Diane.

I noticed recently that a member had posted on another thread and commented later that another forum member had given him negative rep, so they had decided not to bother any more with the thread.
I just wondered what's the point of the negative rep?

    Thanks Lesley.

Way I see it, if we accept the award of positive reps, we can do the same with negative ones. I won't deny it if it's brought up, I've received a few negs - but then I don't mention on a thread when I get a positive rep. I suppose though it might come as a bit of a surprise if folks aren't aware of the system/don't know why it's there. It's nice to be awarded a rep, but we're surely not here to collect them, so if a neg comes along, it shouldn't put anyone off either.

Although personally it's more preferable giving + rep points, I have handed out some negs too - basically whenever 'a deep breath and rolling of the eyes' just didn't help, (and once - unsuccessfully to goad a mate :p ). Use it or don't, the whole rep facility is here for extra choice, but surely not to be taken seriously. In general I often use it as an extra quick way of commenting without clogging up a thread or waiting for time to write a VM.

    For info:
Positive rep points can be awarded without comment, neg reps require the comment field to be completed before they can be submitted.

You can also give out zero points if you only want to make a comment about a specific post.

Mine were raided, but all is not lost the message was -'Not a nice chap. are you? Now this was a question I declined to answer on the grounds of self incrimination.

Diane, It was accepted that anyone who joined His/Her Majesty's Foot Guards had a sense of humour. You laddie, yes you! did you find that funny? I wouldn't know Sir I wasn't issued humour.

On my avatar the green bar - when I clicked on this it said 'Wills is just really nice' Now who am I to argue. However, one hopes we are not in trade description territory here!

Dont take the rep system too serioulsy.
In fact can everyone who reads this Neg rep me for it as I'd like to see how many minus rep points I can amass for 1 post.
    Thank you.

Dunno but someone recently overtook me :(

    I have 5085 points

Excuse me for asking but how do you know someone has more points than you? I thought it was private!

    He played a game of 'I'll show you mine ...' ? ;)

No worries Lesley, they are private. But as explained earlier on in the thread, if anyone is curious enough ... go to Members List in the heading and click on "Reputation" at the top of that particular column. The rankings will appear, but not the number of points.

    Thank you.

Have you been sacked yet for being a negative MOD?

(I gave someone neg rep a few days ago  well he was behaving like a dick, but as you say, not to be taken seriously)

I think most of Owens Negs have come from me over the years, and vice-versa.
Quite often with single very rude word comments.

will members kindly refrain from thanking me for pos repping them.
if you do I'll neg rep you on your next post.

You do not need to thank me for clicking a box & adding a comment.

PS Adam , have you checked the rep I gave you for your last post on here yet?
    :p

Yeah yeah yeah, and so are you... and you know it.
    Reciprocating.

Disappointingly, Owen has pointed out that I inadvertently positive repped him rather than negative, like the bleedin' amateur I am.
Even though the abuse offered was fulsome, this is dissatisfying, and an opportunity to point out that if you visit your UserCP, there is an option to remove recently given rep if done in error. It's time-limited (can't remember how long), so I'm just nipping off to make amends.

I was too late, so it's probably 5 minutes or so.
now I'll have to neg rep him on three other posts to bring things to where I wanted.
    Hoo-hum.
(And yes, Mods & Admins can ignore the 'same person' limits, before anyone asks.)

Personally I've never thought Mods or Admin should get either pos or neg rep.
Unpaid as it might be respect goes with the job.
I have struggled with trying to give some well deserved rep points to a member too soon and, whilst I can understand the reason, I don't know the rules. Can you advise Adam ?

The settings for gaps between repping the same person etc. are outlined earlier on this thread, mate.
As for the calculating of rep power - that might need adjusting again, as the gap between the rep rich or more established members and newer blokes is rather wide. Been thinking of doing some tweaking again. I'd quite like to cap it at a simple maximum, but the system doesn't seem to allow that.

Oh, and neg-rep admins and mods away, chap (particularly Owen, the swine). We honestly don't feel an urgent need for 'respect', and I don't believe any of us take the rep system seriously - not unlike Facebook, it's just another form of comms.

I would leave it as it is - rather confusing.
If it ain't bust don't change it.
Promotes some discussion on the subject and keeps Mods and Admin thinking.
I am prepared for incoming, trying to find an Anderson shelter.

Ranking appears! When you join the mess and attend your first dinner night you eagerly scan the seating plan, a senior bod will say, your down by the salt Wullie! Life, you start as a junior at junior school and then at very stage of life - you are promoted back to junior at every stage!

I was just thinking-well its great to have points-but wouldn't it be great if they could be redeemed at Tesco or somewhere else on your shopping
