Sorry to be thick/dumb, but how are these pluses and minuses awarded?
I see I've got 31, but how did I get them? and what do they mean?

    Hi Tricia
Go to your profile page and look on the left-hand side for the "Reputation" button.
Click it and a list of posts will appear, each with a number in the little green square on the bottom right of the post, next to the arrows buttons.
The number shows how many reputations points you were awarded for each post.
If you click the little green square with the number, you will see who awarded you the reputation point.

As for how they are awarded. If you look at this thread you should be able to see arrow buttons - green up and red down - at the bottom right of each post. These are how reputation points are awarded. If you approve of/agree with something someone posted, you can click on the green up button, etc.

Thanks dbf - I didn't realise there was an appraisal system on here.
I thought I had escaped all that when I retired from my job ;)
But I suppose it can give encouragement, and make the forum more interesting.

I see them more like green shield stamps - with not even the slightest chance of redeeming them.

I quite like the present system. It's hardly ever used in a negative sense or to take sides in an argument. I find it a quick and convenient method for thanking those who have put themselves out to answer questions or share information without the need to constantly think of something original to say, and more importantly, without filling the thread with posts that obscure the relevant points.

I have to agree with Rich above, often if a member has obviously taken a lot of time and research to answer someones question or added something to the thread that clarifies, or uploaded a fantastic picture/model, then I like to give them a good rep as I think they deserve it, and as Rich says it does not fill up the thread with lots of posts saying 'Well done'

    Previous system was better.
+ or - with the ability to leave a private comment - no disruption to the thread with the potential to say 'nice one' to someone.

Nothing on IPB plugins to improve the rep system.

Good Grief, Adam. I'd forgotten the previous system. You're right, it was better. When do we transfer back to vBulletin ? :P
