Bob (Ty) Smith was killed as a result of an enemy bombing raid during the early hours of Friday, 13th June 1941. He was the Lance-Corporal in charge of a signal terminal at a rifle company headquarters on the foreshore at Lowestoft, an active Royal Navy base with minesweeping and anti-submarine patrols.

Ty was the first close friend to be killed during the Second World War. Aged 23, a warm-hearted and loyal supportive friend, he was a prominent sprinter who had taken part the years before the Second World War in the Powderhall Races, a New Year Sprint staged in Scotland since 1870 and an elite sports event. A grievous loss to his family and all his mates in the 8th Battalion The Royal Scots.

Ty was laid to rest in the Cemetery at Innerleithen, near to his Walkerburn home in the Scottish Borders.

    Joe Brown.
