Major North was killed at the start of Operation Pugilist. He was the Adjutant, 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment.

The 69th Infantry Brigade (5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment, 6th & 7th Bns Green Howards) were tasked with clearing/capturing Mareth Line outposts in preparation for the main assault on the Mareth Line by the 151st Infantry Brigade (6th, 8th & 9th Bns Durham Light Infantry). A 'thug patrol' from the 6th Bn Green Howards captured a position called FREDA (map reference 6307) and the 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment followed through and established themselves North/North West of FREDA. However, a minefield was encountered South East of FREDA and this resulted in several casualties. Major North was killed here.

He is remembered on the Southend-on-Sea County Borough War Memorial: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Essex/SouthendOnSeaCountyBoroughIndexWW2-N.htm
