    The DCLI , however , were falling thick and fast . It could only be a question of time now before they would be overrun by sheer weight of numbers . Lieut.-Col. James with the remnants of his battalion fought on. When last seen , he was directing the fire of the artillery from up a tree . A machine gun burst caught him in the neck and he fell dead almost beheaded.
