Finally got some of my great uncle photos copied (23) on to my computer. Some are of decent quality. My great uncle took these photos and they have been buried in his daughters attic longer than my lifetime. If anyone can tell me anything about these images I would be grateful (regiments, locations etc). Some of the writings on the back suggest some where taken in the Lebanon, Lybia and Egypt. He also served in India. More to follow ........ I originally posted this on the wrong thread OOPs
Some very interesting photos there Stephen, can you give us the descriptions on the back please, relating to which photo? Any of guys in pith helmets for Adam (Von Poop)?
Any of guys in pith helmets for Adam (Von Poop)? My Gt Uncle and associate wearing a Pith for Von Poop I hope you weren't joking
Not joking at all Stephen - Adam (for some unexplained reason) seems to like pith helmets - and combined with AFVs (tanks or armoured cars) even better! It does make me wonder sometimes...... Hope he sees that!
On slide 20 you can just make out the formation sign for GHQ middle east, just under the big white circle. Don't know the other signs though. but I'll keep digging. Can't make out the cap badge on slide 12, but I don't know what ieme cap badge was like, never seen one. Look forward to seeing more pics. Edit: found a sample of badge here
Just noticed on slide 23 the sign lecture room in the background. I was wondering before re: your mans emergency commission and thought maybe he was an instructor? just a thought.

Hope he sees that! Just for clarity Mike, the photo I shared with my Gt Uncle wearing a Pith was pre-war in fact it dates back to 1927 when he worked in British Guiana.

Great detective work I hadnt noticed that. My Gt Uncle didn't talk much about the war, but being an instructor is one of the few thing his daughter conveyed to me when I interviewed her. Thanks for checking this stuff out and for the links provided in other posts. Its all really helpful. I will be sorting through other photos and will posting them as time allows. Cheers!!
but being an instructor is one of the few thing his daughter conveyed to me when I interviewed her.......... Ah! yeah that all fits.seems he went overseas about same time IEME was formed? (1943) probably to assist setting up the new IEME.

Edit: found a sample of badge here All things being well, I am expecting to receive his IEME war diaries from Kew in the next couple of weeks which I hope will helpful. I will post them if here they are of interest to others. I am also following up with the British Library who have a WW2 Indian Collection. but to date these guys have been less than helpful. The picture of the tankard you shared to demo the IEME badge has got me excited because I believe I saw something similar in his daughters house but it didnt occur to me to take a closer look. I will call her to confirm.

The tankard or the badge? would be great if it were either, or both I spied a Tankard with a similar wooden handle like the picture (with a an emblem) on a high shelf in her kitchen
I spied a Tankard with a similar wooden handle like the picture (with a an emblem) on a high shelf in her kitchen sounds exciting
Hi stephenmyall Slide 16, I'm pretty sure, is the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbeck in the Lebanon. See photos here - Baalbeck Lebanon Photos Page 51 - especially this one - and this one- Cheers
Hi stephenmyall Slide 16, I'm pretty sure, is the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbeck in the Lebanon. See photos here - Baalbeck Lebanon Photos Page 51 - especially this one - Well well well, not only have you solved one mystery for me, you have solved another by sending this link. There is a photo of my man standing in front of a mountain range in the set which I had always assumed was the Himylayas. It is a perfect match of the Lebanon mountain range shown in your link. Thanks a million
Hi stephenmyall Slide 16, I'm pretty sure, is the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbeck in the Lebanon. Cheers Thats a great find. In slide three the chap in foreground with his back to the camera looks like he's taking a photo. Now I'm sure I've seen that photo before just can't think where. Lets see civilians and army, stone pillar in b/g??
My Gt Uncle and associate wearing a Pith for Von Poop I hope you weren't joking Very fetching pic I must say Great lot of photos too Stephen. Jules.
Great lot of photos too Stephen. Jules. I am pleased your liking them, I have more to share and look forward to posting them. Many of these photos have writing on the back, however dont necessarily give any clues to where the photos were taken but they are very endearing . They are mainly messages to his daughter who would have been in her early teens. Things like "I'm back in the Lybian desert now and as you can see from this one I have lost some weight, please don't worry as I am in good spirit and long for the day I can be home with you. Love always, daddy" I find these messages priceless
Things like "I'm back in the Lybian desert now.................. ) Wow, sounds interesting, do you know the date he was in LIbya?
