I have a question regarding machinery bodies fitted to REME 6 x 4 workshop trucks I know that different letter designations related to the specific role for each body, for example 'Z' I believe was a house type for instrument repair, 'B' bodies carried milling and drilling machines etc. My question is this: does anyone have a definitive list for the designation letters and how they relate to the equipment carried ? Many thanks Pete
Pete, The answer is yes. But you may have to wait a day or two while I find it. In the meantime anyone else is welcome to produce one. Mike
Here is a list I was working on some time ago, I don't claim it to be totally accurate. It seemed that there was some differences in the Role letters used by UK and Canadian forces (and I know nothing of the Australians):
I have not found my definitive list yet but I have these pages from the Trux Handbook on 3ton 6 X 4 lorries. This was produced to accompany the range of Trux Models 3ton 6 X 4 kits. Mike
I hope this is readable. From Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Volume II. War Office 1951. Mike
Thanks Mike - that is very useful information. Particularly the second post which distinguishes those Roles phased out or replaced during the war. It explains why some sources I have used appeared to have some Roles missing. - I feel a spreadsheet coming on . The first post which is part of your excellent (and sadly missed) handbook series is also very interesting - do you have the same for the 4x4 machinery lorries? Noel
Noel, Short answer is no. I only did the handbooks for the Trux vehicle ranges. However the bodies were the same for 4 X 4 lorries as for 6 X 4 except that they had low wheel arches. I have several of the Trux bodies slightly modifies and fitted to Ford 4 X 4 cab and chassis. Layout and fittings were as for similar 6 X 4 types. Mike
