My local dentist relocated some time ago from Spandau to the Gesundbrunner Shopping Centre in Wedding, which is about an hour by car in heavy traffic:(.

The good news however, is the fact that not far away from his practice is the remains of a Berlin Flak Tower.:)

After the clean and polish, plus check up I was passed OK to go.

With no work to be carried out, I left to find the nearby Flak Tower.
Although situated on an elevated area next to a park and the neary railway lines, is not too easy to see as the area is full of trees.

I located the Flak Tower which is opposite to the "U" Bahn for Gesundbrunner station.

There is a Bunker museum located here, but I had insufficient time to visit. Outside were two single person air raid shelters, photo's attached.

Another visit will be required later.

I took a picture of the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz, which is just a short distance South along the main road.

I walked across the road and followed the pathway leading up to the Tower and after negotiating lots of steps you find yourself on the top level of North facing towers.

Lots of grafitti I am afraid, but it does provide a high vantage point over a lot of Western and Northern Berlin.

Not really too much to see and the towers are topped off with high metal railings to stop people throwing themselves off;)

I hope that the photographs will be of interest to some of our members.

As you will see by a photograph of the panorama, the sky went very dark as I was walking up at noon today and then the rain started, so I ended up rather wet.

    Gerard,

There are lots of large man made hills around Berlin and Brandenburg following dumping of thousands of tons of rubble.

I intend to visit the Bunker museum and will see if the towers are visible from the extreme western end of the railway station.

A shot looking up towards the Flaktowers, if possible, would probably look good.

Something else to put on the calander:)

    Jakob,

I am not sure if you can get access from the Bunker museum located nearby at the Railway station.

I suspect that there may well be an underground link to the Flakturm, but according to the website on my first post, there appears to a tour only with the Historical Society.

The Building was filled with rubble and some has been cleared out to provide the tour according to the link.

Thanks for that. I am actually pretty sure I saw a documentary on the history channel about the flakturms in Berlin and that this very bunker offered an "extreme tour", where one could climb further down into the rubble inside the bunker.

    Hi folks,

The tower IS opened for tours by the Berlin Underworld group however it is only on specific dates and times.

Google them for the website which has details of tours they provide.

    Cracking!!

I saw a documentary about them in Channel 5 in the UK that included filming inside one; a lot of their history programmes are made jointly with the History Channel so it was probably the same one. Was Antony Beevor in it?

    Hi All,
Berlin unterwelten do tours to the flakturn mainly in german but they also do tours in english as well, 10 euros for a tour. They also do extreme tours here as well as the tower has only 2 floors accessable to the public etc. The extreme tour involves absailing down to the various floors at the bottom are the massive ammo stores along with a lot of relics as they are still digging this out on the lower levels. I had a great time on my visit.

Forgot to mention when I was speaking Deitmar Arnold one of the founders of the group, he said that they were also looking for the connecting tunnel to the radar flaktower this is approx half a mile away from the flakturm and they believe based on the other towers that they have been to that this still exists.

Speaking of man made rubble mountains Tom. Have you taken a trip up Teufelsberg? (one of my old stomping grounds). I hear it is in quite a state? Pardon the pun but what a waste!

I heard that there was plans afoot to gain access to the old original SS building, buried by the rubble and built over.

I believe it was to be tunnelled into by a German Historical group.

It has gone quiet and nothing heard of late.

The area still looks impressive and was a real Top Secret establishment during the cold war.
