Karsten Fehr, the mayor of Unkel has a dream.
Together with the Mayor of Remagen is planning to re-do the bridge for use of pedestrians and bikers only.
    But they need sponsors.
Today the villagers use ferries and cars have to go a long way.
The two huge pillars are still there and can be purchased from the <railway Company.

    Stefan.

Went there back in 2008. Camped inthe local campsite. I do like the idea of a cycle/pedestrian bridge.

I will ask for a PDF of the article including a photo of what it looks like today.
I might even contact the mayors for plans.

    Stefan.

I have to admit I am surprised that in all these years a new bridge has not been built.

I'm not - as it was not the mainline. It was built in WW1 for military use. Post-WW2 there was no need for it.

Fair, but from the point of view of personal transportation? The railroad bridge used to allow pedestrian traffic too. And as Stefan wrote people have to go a long way around. But, it's not like the Rhine is a little stream you can cheaply bridge!

They have ferries across the Rhine. We went on one nearby.
I imagine the boatmen's union didnt want a new bridge.

I do not believe the boat men are organised.
Anyway, I talked to the responsible person in Unkel; according to her, they are at present running a couple of feasibly studies and need money too.
I keep you posted on any progress
    Stefan.
