I think my family was typical. My grandfather and uncles had served in the British Armed Forces in WWI and were too old for military service in WWII.

Several of my older cousins served in the British military in WWII -- I can remember five being in the Army (one was with the BEF at Dunkirk, another was at the Singapore surrender to the Japanese) one in the Navy (I have forgotten which ship) and two in the RAF. There were others who served but their families were not close to us and I cannot remember the details.

My paternal grandfather served in the Lovat Scouts in WW1 and maternal grandfather was a sniper in the 19th Australian Infantry Battalion. In WW2 my father served on HMS Campbell and after D Day at Nowra NSW Australia to set up HMS Nabbington, the FAA base for the BPF. Mother's brother was RAAF Radar in New Guinea and their brother in law was captured in Singapore as a member of the 2/12 Field Company RAE and worked on the Burma Railway. My father's brothers served in the RAF as a wireless tech and another in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, just managing to escape from Singapore. All came home.
