Did you look on Ancestry for his service records? If so you won't find them, they are still held by the Ministry of Defence and cost £30 to obtain a copy.

Like I said - His service records are not in the public domain so you won't find them anywhere online. You have to apply to the Ministry of Defence for them.

    TD,

Just to qualify your comment for benefit of OP - 40% WW1 era British Army service records are on Ancestry/ FMP. The remainder were destroyed in a 1940 fire caused by enemy action.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks, I did after posting think to edit it but for the premise that we are basically searching for WW2 records (which as we all know by now are only available via application to Glasgow )I thought better of editing that post.

    TD

    edited to add:
I guess we should say they were actually destroyed because someone assumed that in a basement of a building in London they would not be destroyed, I believe they had the opportunity to move them to a safe place in the country but did not accept it -

thank you all very kindly gentlemen for your help, i was thinking of doing what you say on the gov't site it states £30 is none refundable even if the search is fruitless, i want to make sure that it is my father's records before sending any money which there is no problem just do't want to find out it's not him

    Hi squipper
I think my grandfather served with yours going by the info you and everyone else gave.
    My grandad was
    Gunner / Driver Arthur Small
    1569538
    15/08/40 to 17/9/46
We know he was in sector 53 in Italy and a stalag too.
If any of the kind contributors want to help me too that'd be great!

    Hi squibber,
I note from your earlier post to which you attached your grandfather's RN Service Record that you could not understand it. If this is still the case, I will have a go at interpreting it for you. It is interesting to note that he served in submarines for much of his time - quite something in those days.

    Grandfather's RN Record.
First column is the name of the ship/establishment/accounting base. Googling these with HMS in front will get you quite a lot of info.
HMS Victory II was the accounting base for Stokers and Engine Room Artificers.
HMS Dolphin was the submarine base/training establishment in Gosport. HMS Crescent, HMS Royal Arthur and HMS Lucia were Submarine Depot Ships used for accommodation etc when the submarines were not on patrol. Crescent and Royal Arthur were ex-warships, Lucia was a German liner captured in 1914. The figures in brackets (K10, K6, L56, L18 and L16) are the submarines in which he served.
    British Submarines of WW1
The next two columns List and No. are the Pay and Victualling references. The first is the ship's account ledger, the second is his no. in the ledger.
Next column - Rating. Sto II = Stoker Second Class, Sto I = Stoker First Class, A/Ldg Sto = Acting Leading Stoker and Ldg Sto = Leading Stoker.
Column - Badges refers to award of Good Conduct Badges.
Periods of Service - dates when serving in Ship/Establishment.
Columns - Character and Ability. Assessed every year. Character - VG = Very Good. Ability - Sat = Satisfactory, Sup (in 1918) = Superior. Overall during his career I would say a good, steady and reliable man.
Discharged from RN 27 Sept 1922 on completion of his engagement.
25 Feb 1925 joined RFR (Royal Fleet Reserve).
28 Oct 1939 Particulars of Service sent to RAF Ruislip.

Hope this helps, if you require more ask but I think you would do better on a site orientated towards WW1.
