regimental dress code when wearing kilt.

    in regard to the wearing of the kilt, i see that to dress regimental means that nothing is worn under the kilt.
    i also read that it is not allowed in highland regiments and inspections are carried out by the royal sargent major for that purpose.
    why is the wearing of anything under the kilt not allowed, and how did that come about and for what purpose.

    Nothing must be worn under the kilt - it should all be in perfect working order.
