With the research I am doing into my Granddads Regiment and their time in Normandy it was Only time before I would have to start looking into Their opposition and their movements to get a True understanding of what was going on. For this I am currently reading SS Hell On The Western Front by Chris Bishop & Great Battles of the Waffen SS by Peter Darman, it is in this first book that I found Something that surprised me (see image below). I had heard and seen footage of Polish and Russian Soldiers being press ganged into fighting for Germany, But Indian soldiers and a few of the other countries Totally surprised me and these by all accounts volunteered. You learn something new everyday.
We have got a few threads on Indians in the german & Japanese service. Here's some info on Indians in the Wehrmacht. Indian Volunteers in the German Wehrmacht in WWII
I think there's a thread on here somewhere about Muslim/ Indian soldiers in the SS. Found em http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/general/6277-indian-volunteers-german-wehrmacht.html http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/holocaust/10238-were-muslim-ss-most-anti-semitic.html
Cheers Drew & Owen some interesting reading there, as I said I wasn't that surprised about the rest to be honest, but the Indian attachment to the SS somewhat did.
