Yes, certainly part of the uniform, left shoulder for officers, right shoulder for ORs.

Thank you Tony! Im not so familiar with lanyards, if you look closely on the pictures, shouldn't there be at least one loop at the ends after the "balls"?
My question, is this one 100%? Zero knowledge on this item unfortunately.

Can't say that I have ever seen an original before so not precisely sure, some very poor photos in the Osprey book " The British Reconnaissance Corps in World War 2", can be seen here. When opened I suggest a search for lanyard, or you might miss them!

Edit: A google search for 'ww2 british army lanyards' produces a number of images.

There should be a loop and only worn for walking out or possibly parades. Down to your unit to dictate policy on wear.

There are reproduction's out there and many different manufacturers variations as not an issue item.

Just by chance came across this photo of my father, 56 Recce, wearing his lanyard. No date, but he was promoted to Sergeant in June 42 prior to embarking for North Africa in the October, no medal bar so I am assuming just before he left. As an aside, and I think a fascinating coincidence, his father's birthday was 3 September and his mother's 8 May!

Probably repro as the yarn is twisted (anti clockwise looking at the ends when making) the modern way (opposite to when made in WW2)
