My father Ronald Harry James Perrin served in Burma and whilst waiting for his army records can anyone recommend any suitable books to read about the conflict. The picture published in the Sunday Pictorial I was told shows him, top right, 300 yards from a Japanese camp behind enemy lines. Later he was shot through the leg, recuprated in a hospital in Dacca and finished the war as a MP in India.
Welcome to the forum. There are couple of good books about Burma campaign like Louis Allen's "Burma: The Longest War" or Latimer's "Burma: The Forgotten war". I think that I already saw that photo somewhere I can't remember where.
Hello and a warm welcome! Fergal Keane's "Road of Bones - The Siege of Kohima 1944" is one of those 'cannot put down books' Over 500 pages meticulously researched, covering from the fall of Rangoon to the eventual defeat of the Japanese in Burma. Gerry
Has to be George McDonald Fraser's 'Quartered safe out here' - superb book about the authors own experiences.
I think that I already saw that photo somewhere I can't remember where. I found it. It was also published in Osprey's book "British Infantryman in the Far East 1941-1945" on the page 23.
Hi and welcome, The previous posts have covered the overview for Burma brilliantly, as soon as you know more about your father's service you can zero in on specific regiment, time or place. Good luck. Bamboo.
I found it. It was also published in Osprey's book "British Infantryman in the Far East 1941-1945" on the page 23. Many thanks to you all especially for Sol's memory!
My Uncle Cpl Alfred Heath a Royal Marine died in the Arakan early in 1945, having joined up in 1940. There seems to be lots on the Army and Navy but Marines get little mention anywhere. Do they have War Diaries? and is there any book which deals them and their organisation , weapons etc especially in Burma.
RM have diaries from WW2 - I have a copy of their inviolvemnet in Op Harpoon (It was a May 1940 Op in Holland with the Irish Guards). They are held at the National Archives under ADM series.
