Can I suggest 'Theirs is the Glory' which if you watch it now is somewhat dated (as its b&w) but was made in 1945 using men of hte 1st Airborne Division to re-create the Battle of Arnhem and filmed mainly in and around Arnhem and Oosterbeek. Stanley Maxted re-recording his epic despatch from a trench in the grounds of the Hartenstein and so on. Was re-issued a whiel ago on dvd.... . Ordered! Last time i looked for it people wanted silly money for VHS copies. Cheers!

Piece of Cake Good insight to the dashing pilot role. A bit of info on the book. Paul Richey, a fighter pilot in France and the Battle of Britain hated this book. I think he said it was total and utter tripe (or words to that effect). I don't know what Robinson said to that.:twocents:
Enemy at the Gates is to be avoided at all cost (except for Miss Weisz that is). Saints and Soldiers is a rather unknown but pleasant movie about a US squad lost during the Battle of the Bulge. Ladies and Germs...Meine Dammen und Herren...A historic moment for all to see. I am agreeing with Exxley about Rachel sort of She looks much better in the Mummy flicks...but not quite as hot as Patricia Velasquez.
Glad to see reason is speaking out against 'Enema at the Gates'. Avoid at all costs, it's arse, Jude Law seems to have been genetically engineered to ruin any potentially promising film, and I'll never forgive anyone involved in remaking 'Alfie'....How dare they???? Nice to see it filling up the £2.99 box at Virgin. I'd forgotten about Stalingrad. (several films of that name, assume we're talking the 1993 version, Vilsmaier.) Top film. Grim, grim, grim, grimmety grim. Has it's flaws but v. good. Make sure you've got the option to turn the dubbing off, It's miles better in German. Yeah (Of course that version Von )the dubbed version of Das Boat is even funnier...wow I'm just agreeing with everyone.:wow: Curious though what flaws? I like to critique films.

I'll have to watch it (Stalingrad) again next time I feel like being manically depressed, just remember being mildly dissatisfied with it. You know the feeling, "great film....but..." Very odd yourself and Exxley agreeing, I hope you both never meet her, you may have to fight. As for Das Boot in English "Just say NO!"... but if we're talking even funnier dubbed films the biggest difference between original language joy and dubbed misery is surely 'The Seven Samurai'... In Japanese it's a moving, epic, overwhelming even, classic. The dubbing they chose makes it seem lower rent than 'Monkey'. Back to ww2.

In English, I would say that the Tipperary part of the movie isnt as cool.
Has anyone seen 'Come and See'? It rated highly in one of those '100 greatest' things on Ch4. Looked superb. JG Ballard is just describing it on the radio as "The finest film about modern war ever". I'd love to see it but When I last looked it wasn't available on DVD for region2..
'Theirs is the Glory' is an epic and is excellent despite some of the 'cardboard' special effects, 'Das Boot' in German will always be a benchmark in authenticity, 'Stalingrad' in German is a good film even if it does loose it in parts, 'A Bridge Too Far' will always be one of my favourites. 'Saving Pte. Ryan' and 'Band of Brothers' (Series) took athenticity in the action if not the story to a new level that can only be good news for portraying war with all the true horror that such a subject demands. Glory is for the people who have been there and not for the audiences of films made in order to 'entertain'. :sign_war: I always watch German films in German and English language films in English.... it just makes so much sense. :sign_what:
And for those of us who can't speak German and don't want to miss the action we have to watch in English. Grrrrrr. I know they aren't completely accurate, but what about Longest Day and Dambusters? Come on, they were fantastic! Much better than Private Chuffin Ryan or Band of Brothers. And what's that one with John Mills going AWOL to get back home to his missus cos he thinks she may be about to cheat on him? It was on Ch4 the other week. Oh Lord, that's going to annoy me now. Great for Life back home. I'll have to think now. That's a shame, was hoping to get through this weekend without engaging the old grey matter. Kitty

Kitty Ah yes grasshopper there is a most wise way of watching movie with authenticity by using famous invention known as subtitles. (use chinese accent in brain when reading) This resulting in no Grrrrrrr and complete understanding.
Anyone seen Islands in the Stream(1977)? Isn't that a song from Dolly Parton and Kenny Rodgers? :wow:
Ah yes grasshopper there is a most wise way of watching movie with authenticity by using famous invention known as subtitles. (use chinese accent in brain when reading) This resulting in no Grrrrrrr and complete understanding. (Naff Chinese accent required) Ah Venerable Master, humble Grasshopper no like famous invention of subtitles for very good reason she miss action whilst trying to keep up with dialogue. Therefore Grrrrrrr is only viable response. So sorry if Grasshopper offends Venerable Master, but famous invention of subtitles is pain in the butt. I miss good bits always and have to rewind DVD.
I miss good bits always and have to rewind DVD. Well, a tech point of order here Mr Chairman. The DVD never actually rewinds. It always spins in the same direction. You may 'rewind' through the data on the disk, but the disk won't at any point actually rewind. She's not going to be happy with that one :Hydrogen:
She's not going to be happy with that one :Hydrogen: Grasshopper no bothered by Cute One's pedantic nature today. She more stressed by continuous cock-ups in her fieldwork notebook. Grasshopper need a holiday. Cute One need a hobby. Anyone know what the John Mills' film was? It's driving me nuts trying to think of it. Kitty
