Made during the war: 'The Way To The Stars' , made shortly after the war: 'Twelve O'Clock High', 'The Cruel Sea'. They may lack the special effects and graphic violence and language of modern films but they give a genuine view of the attitudes and atmosphere. The scene in 'The Cruel Sea' where Captain Jack Hawkins chooses to depth charge the U-Boat and kills the shipwrecked British sailors in the water is one of the most dreadful and moving sequences in any film.

the Bombing scene from Rendevous in london was described to me as being close to reality!

Saw it the other week but did like Went The Day Well.
Also Dunkirk with John Mills great 1940s atmosphere. ( Also they were meant to be the Wilts Regt)
Most of the time I hate war films cos they are so wrong.

The best WW2 movie is of course "A Bridge Too Far."

i found somehting wierd about that one.

When the british soldier goes to get one of supply drops he is shot by a sniper.
Later the one dutch kid is killed by a sniper too,but something that is almost comical is that, ITS LIKE THE SAME EXACT SOUND AND EVERYTHING!. I might be exaggerating but i thought i was a little funny how it was no different

Try Stalingrad instead for a much better film. It is very depressing and harsh but a well made film. With the budget that they had for Enemy at the Gates I could have made two films myself that would have been better. Bad screenplay, real stupid dialogue...The kid with the runny nose can't die quick enough...who the hell cast him...Jude Law is about as Russian as James Bond. The only descent actor was Ed Harris. It's about as good as Battle of the Bulge...Campy and they weren't trying to be.

    Try:

Battleground 1949 Best WWII movie for its age.

Band Of Brothers Overall good entertainment acting will not disappoint.

Battle Of Britain The only shortcoming of this film is the poor special effects.

    You've seen Das Boat

Cross of Iron Sam Peckinpah is an excellent director, make sure the kids aren't around.

Piece of Cake Good insight to the dashing pilot role.

    Just for Fun:

    Great Escape

    Von Ryans Express

    A Bridge Too Far

Enemy at the Gates is to be avoided at all cost (except for Miss Weisz that is).
Saints and Soldiers is a rather unknown but pleasant movie about a US squad lost during the Battle of the Bulge.

Glad to see reason is speaking out against 'Enema at the Gates'. Avoid at all costs, it's arse, Jude Law seems to have been genetically engineered to ruin any potentially promising film, and I'll never forgive anyone involved in remaking 'Alfie'....How dare they???? Nice to see it filling up the £2.99 box at Virgin.

I'd forgotten about Stalingrad. (several films of that name, assume we're talking the 1993 version, Vilsmaier.) Top film. Grim, grim, grim, grimmety grim. Has it's flaws but v. good.
Make sure you've got the option to turn the dubbing off, It's miles better in German.

Enemy At The Gates rates with Saving Private Ryan.
Great effects, a good spectacle but rubbish story.
    Stalingrad I agree is better.

To side track. Does anyone remember "Let Him Have It" about Derek Bentley, the last hanging in GB?
Well try watching that in German with a new German girlfriend in Hannover and hear the groans at the first scene....it's the Luftwaffe blitzing London.

Can I suggest 'Theirs is the Glory' which if you watch it now is somewhat dated (as its b&w) but was made in 1945 using men of hte 1st Airborne Division to re-create the Battle of Arnhem and filmed mainly in and around Arnhem and Oosterbeek. Stanley Maxted re-recording his epic despatch from a trench in the grounds of the Hartenstein and so on. Was re-issued a whiel ago on dvd....
