Recce Graves in Thailand.

Smudger Jnr Our Man in Berlin

I visited Thailand way back in 1988 and walked around both Chungkai and Kanchanaburi CWGC's.

I saw several Recce Troopers Badges and as my father was a Recce man I took photographs.

I am afraid that the quality is not good as I only had a Canon Sureshot at the time and the photographs are scanned.

The first four shots are of Chungkai.
The last three shots are from Kanchanaburi.

I hope that they may come in handy for anyone out there.

    Regards
    Tom

    Paul,

    Thanks for that.
All in the bag following the fall of Singapore and there was great interest in Lancashire from the relatives of those taken prisoner, when the camps were liberated.

I remember the cemetery was extremely well kept considering the conditions.

    Tom,

Do you have a photo of any of the unidentified graves in Kanchanaburi? I am researching a man who died there, and may be in one of these graves.

    Paul, No Problem.

Only wish I was a WW2 forum member back then, as I would have taken them all for posterity.

I just regret not taking more at the time.

    Paul,

Thats what I admire about those veterans and the veterans decendants who have documented the military service for posterity before it was too late.

I am afraid that I was one of those who failed to ask questions at a time that would have enabled a good documentation to be put together.

Having said that, my father never really liked talking about his experiences and mainly shut them away.

What exactly were "recce troopers", and what were they doing in Thailand?

I know this is slightly off topic, but unfortunately I haven't really heard much about them.

Recce Troopers are members of the Reconnaissance Corps a war raised force. You can read more on this forum under http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/recce/

The majority of Recce buried in Thailand were POWs captured by the Japanese at Singapore in 1942. See the ROH earlier in this thread

    Wills,

Sorry to see that your Uncle has no known grave.

Cremation was ordered in all cases of contagious diseases, which were many, otherwise all the camps occupants would have perished.

    Regards

I have established that one of my uncles died in a flying accident flying out of RAF Halfpenny Green, Bobbington, Staffordshire. This occured on the Brown Clee Hills on the 28 April 1943.

The aircraft involved was Avro Anson Mk I NE5379

There is a small monument to the 27 airmen who died on the Brown Clee Hills which I have visited and of which I have some photos (if they are of interest to anyone).

I've also visited RAF Halfpenny Green (or Wolverhampton Airport as it is now) and would be interested to see any photographs etc. that anyone has of the airfield during the war.

If anyone else knows anything about any of the above and has got any other information I would really be interested.
