I am led to believe that the 13th Field Survey Company was the only Map Producing unit serving with BEF in 1940. Can anyone confirm this? A friend claims his father served with the Royal Engineers in France during the evacuation and that they were the only unit producing maps throughout the campaign. I am not sure that this is correct but would like to know. Regards Paul J.
The BEF war diaries cover three other Field Survey Companies plus a Field Survey Depot. Maps and Survey may answer the question of who actually produced the maps. The Defence Surveyors Association website also has some short unit histories in their Historical Documents section. There's one for 14 Map Reproduction Section which suggests each Fd Svy Coy had a repro Sec - it's a theory, I haven't read it yet...
There was a actual Map Department in France from Sept 39 to May poss June 1940. I don't have the units war diary yet but I suspect it will identify what units were (if any) producing maps.
