Thats criminal that you have turned onto the BBC.. I only turn them on in my wagon because my outdated wagon does not have dab radio and ( Its only two years old). My new phone has a radio and I MUST work out to how to use it.. Can't be soon enough. The BBC are not worth the steam off my water whilst at home. I barred them many, many years ago. Its a nice evening in Ringwood.. Just up the road from Poole.. A cracking pub, with decent food, and fabulous ale. I forgot to ring up the BBC at dinner time to ask if that is Ok? Regards, Stu.
Three peak areas being breathlessly reported by the Beeb. They finally got the 40° they craved. Charlwood. Coningsby. Heathrow. Spot the connection. Who could imagine that areas containing acres of black tarmac and hundreds of jet engines might be a tad warmer than anywhere else in a heatwave. Been reading some quite funny Aussies laughing at us. Hard to disagree.
Adam -I was just saying that to the hubby about Coningsby, lots of Typhoons there, but to be fair, there's not been that many up today. The skies have been quiet for a change. Lesley
I was just about to ask if Lesley had survived but I see that she has. Record temperatures, power cuts and fires in her part of the world. Mike
I'm still surprised in life has to the places that I'm asked to make a delivery. I do like a challenge even though my vehicle is fourty foot long, and is not articulated. Its does not bend to those that do not understand the difference. Not being sarcastic. Sorry if I'm coming across that way. Left Andover @ around 10.15 hrs expecting to be at HMP The Verne, Portland for around 13.00 hrs.. What a place to find. Blimey.. That sat-nav took me through a old council estate. Got to the top of the hill, and it showed a tunnel sign of 4 meters. Shit... Mine is 4.1. I found the prison staff most helpfull. Job done and freight unloaded. Much needed toilet and fill up my water bottle. Load up Poole tomoz for a long journey to well North of Edinburgh. Hope them caravans do not get in my way. Most times they are spot on. Nice vehicle drivers. The temperatures are taken in the shade all over the country at various points. Thats my understanding. Regards, Stu
My car sensor read 40.5degC at Morrisons Supermarket car park in Stamford (Lincolnshire) this afternoon. Then travelled the few miles to Spalding where it was a relatively cold 38degC at 7.30pm.....but......the temperature reading was 41.5degC as I passed through Tallington (where the road crosses the East Coast Main Line). If you think it's hot, search Basra Iraq where it's going to stick in the high 40s - low 50s for the next few WEEKS.
Nothing scientific about this. I'm not sure that the mercury has ever been up this high before though. Somewhere around 116 of old Mr. Fahrenheit's finest.
It hit 40 °C here today. In the six decades of my life the highest temperature I have ever experienced was 35 °C. Thankfully the BBC gave us a week's warning. Also they enabled me to monitor the situation every two hours. Their advice on how to deal with it was first rate. Finally it is cooling down and I am switching from iced water to g&t. Our local weatherman, Paul Hudson deserves a bloody medal.
I feel cheated! we only reached 38.8 in the shade in the garden. Husky wasn't impressed and after an hour panting and drinking iced water she nodded off behind closed curtains and open door. Wife developed a minor medical emergency.. Rang the GP surgery, every clinic in Tamworth was closed for training ( a once a month occurrence apparently) message said ring 111 or 999. Rang 111 to be told they were unable to answer any more calls due to a heatwave. Leave a message and they would get back. Rang my son a paramedic to get advice and tried to convince the wife that she was in the hands of the best trained First Aid Trainer for 1998. (Not impressed). One of my sons complained of headaches and temperature. My feet and ankles were swollen by this time making driving difficult so oldest son still at home took me to a chemist who had Lateral Flow Tests in stock. (very rare items apparently). Younger son tested positive so now life has taken on a new perspective as no-one will come here. After 2 hours 111 called to apologise for the delay someone will call later. another hour passed then a nurse rang who had problems speaking clear English (we are a bit old and hard of hearing yer know). Decided to ring the GP tomorrow rather than drive to Burton or Birmingham and wait four hours in A & E like last time when she had a stroke. Hopefully we will get one of the four Practise nurses to see her. (Only one full time GP now and one part time). Under new management, no one knows us any more after 43 years going there. Govt needs to save money, cant afford a proper NHS.
Unfortunately, the fires usually experienced in the UK are very different to wind driven fires on hot, low rh days. I was sorry to see that homes were lost.
Yesterday I received my PhD (a year late thanks to COVID) from the University of Wolverhampton. Bedecked in PhD robes - far bigger and heavier than BA and MA rig - I did feel like I was doing an impression of The Wicked Witch of the West (I'm melllllltiiiing.....) . But we made it - and I thank members of this august forum who were supportive, directed me at sources, and helped. Thank you.
Certainly busy in my neck of the woods yesterday. Quite a significant fire on the golf course close to the David Lloyd Centre in Staines Road Hampton. There is a Shell Petrol Garage located just 200m from the incident and so evacuation measures were on standby.
