    Appreciate any help…
Hi, my grandad Felix Vincent Jennings joined the RASC in Redruth Cornwall. DCLI December 1939. He was a Driver (Heavy vehicles).
His records state that he was placed in the Y list 1942 (non-effectives) and medically examined and placed in cat. B7
I know the list is 1-8. Does anyone know what cat.B7 means?
    Kind regards
    Vince Jennings

I would like to find out exactly what criteria is used for X, Y and Z Lists There appears to be a general reluctance on the behalf of MOD documents to explain this.

From my experience the Y List lies between X and Z Lists.
X Lists designate status when not posted in a unit and availability for duty.
Y List is used for longer term events such as recovery from hospital or a general lack of vacancies for a particular trade, requiring the candidate to retrain or be posted elsewhere.
Z List is seemingly final discharge (Demob).

Y List is normally accompanied by a qualifying statement as to where the person is going next.
i.e. Reserve, new trade or Movement to a new theatre of war.

    example:
Letter home after a spell in hospital with jaundice:

"As you surmise my efforts to get back to my old unit were prompted mainly by the “Y List” or “X” as it is known for officers.
Sad things happened to some of our officers last year and though the system has now been reorganised to give sick men a reasonable chance to return to their units,
the general feeling that we are still governed by past events.
As it is, I could have been away for another month touring NA and Italy before re-joining my Bty. had I not taken things into my own hands.
But just as well I did make a quick return. For on arrival I found my troop commander and three of my best NCO’s absent in hospital and plenty of work to be done.
A little longer and I could easily have lost my Troop and had to go to another.
As it is I have spent a very busy and often harassed time doing Troop Commander myself.
