My Father passed away recently, and as a result I have come into posession of some photographs, Dad always told me they were rare and the Government of the time banned publication of them, a lot were so he told me confiscated.

These photographs were taken by a German or French photographer, and show scenes of the failed raid on Dieppe, there are also pictures of the Aliied POW's being marched through Dieppe.

I'd just like to know if anyone has heard of these pictures, and if there is nay truth to the rarity of them

Without seeing them it would be pretty impossible to answer your query.

If you post them up make sure you watermark them first so nobody can copy them......

There are quite a few photos similar to the ones you describe , if you'd like to post some make sure you watermark them.

    Welcome aboard Stoker,
Sounds interesting, I'm sure 'new' pictures of Dieppe would be quite a thing.

Can I take it you've had a look on Google to see if any of these shots are already in the public domain?
Not uncommon for multiple entirely authentic prints to exist of contemporary images, and many Dieppe ones were suppressed at the time.

It would be nice to see them, but you would be best to watermark them, I'm sure one of the guys will help you out with that.

    Jess.

Many thanks for the replies guys.

All I know is, my Dad got/found/bought these pics in France after landing on gold beach, (2nd wave).

I am quite sure they are originals and genuine, he may even have go them off a German soldier, because he also has some German uniform artifacts shall we say.

Also in the collection are a great deal of pictures taken in the desert, he was in the REME, so there are a lot of pics of large machinery, these were probably taken around the Kasassain area. Any help on this would be welcomed.

My Fathers estate is still held by the executors, they are mine according to the will, but I as yet do not have access to them, however I have seen them recently, and can confirm they exist

I think until you are in a position to post them, then it's very hard for any of us to offer help.

I would think that the photographs are similar to those taken by the official German war photographers and camera crews who were part of Geobbels Propaganda Ministry.I should imagine that as the official photographers were at their task, individuals would be also taking photographs which became part of their "library".The photographs were always taken after the enemy had been routed to indicate to the German home front the poor standard of his soldiers and equipment.Bomber Command and USAAF aircraft and aircrew dead were frequently photographed in Geobbels's propaganda war to indicate to the German population that the Luftwaffe were effectively dealing with the bombing offensive.(I do recollect photographs in the Great War of kilt clad Scottish soldiers lying dead on the battlefield, again official German photographs and I would say that the Allies also recorded similar scenes.)

No doubt individual German soldiers took photographs themselves.I saw some 20 years ago on a BBC programme where a German soldier took his own cine camera on to the Russia front and took snapshots of the campaign and also on leave.

According to the camera, the German soldiers were always in good spirits as you would expect, despite their ordeals on the Ostfront. Then, there were the others who recorded the actocities perpetrated by their units and which, later, were to be used against the Third Reich when retribution came.Whether or not there was censorship in taking photographs, I do not know.Seems logical that there would be but it would be difficult to enforce totally.

Look forward to the photographs being posted.Perhaps some of us could add location and detail

    "Watermarks" how is this effected?.

This is more the sort of Info I needed, from what I remember when I saw them last, they are sepia tone, an dsome of them have writing on them, short details of the pictures, can't remember exactly what they say.
As soon I have access to them I will post them up, and thanks I do know how to watermark them, and that is good advice.

Well here they are, sorry for the delay, but it's taken me quite some time to get over my Dad's passing.

I've done the pics as a montage.

The final image id from the back of one, its the photographic paper mark, which proves they are genuine first generation and not copies in themsleves.

The Orange squares on them are caused by my father using stamp hinges to mount them in an album.
