    This is really interesting, dbf!!!

So, Deacon is in UK because he either died there (he never crossed the channel) or, he was wounded across the channel and brought back. Hall is in France which definitely means that he died there.
Therefore, if Deacon and Hall were together all the time, that "flying shell fragment" incident happened across the channel and was the reason why both eventually died. Hall died there but Deacon was wounded and brought back to UK.
On the other hand, if they were not together, Deacon's death was caused by a different incident. If Deacon never crossed the channel, he died a lot earlier on the 5th. If he crossed the channel, he got wounded (in a similar incident or not) and brought back to UK where he died.

    Perico,

The answer to how Lt. Terry Deacon died would be covered in the book written by his wife Audrey Deacon (née Hawkins) titled "Diary of a Wren 1940-1945: War Years in the Women's Royal Naval Service".

"Many families lost loved ones during this period but you will not fail to be moved by the author’s account of how she watched her husband and childhood sweetheart - a Second Lieutenant in the Sixth Airborne Division - slowly sink into the abyss of death."

Her papers are also available at the IWM:

Private Papers of Mrs A D Deacon MBE
