OP....keep a note of when any of the big model railway societies in the Republic are having an exhibition! They usually attract a LOT of dealers, including a lot of specialised book dealers, from the UK - I've picked up a lot of history material from that source in recent years! Or alternatively - pick up one of the bigger-circulation model railway magazines and go through the adverts for specialist booksellers.
good day holyboy.m.11 dec 2014.10:32pm.re:railwaymen at war.by h.d.moore.it sound like a great subject.they kept the nation mooving under blitz conditions. it would make a great post if you have any link on the subject,i will try google.thank you for posting regards bernard85
Many thanks for your tips, Oldman and Phylo, certainly worth a punt, all I need is a bit of time, just so busy at this time of year. I have been in touch with a chap who knows the author, so I am hoping for great things! The book was published privetately, so I would imagine in very limited numbers. The cover of the book features a photograph of L Memorial Museum in Caen and the strap line is ' The true story of how 360 men were withdrawn from Army regiments and Railway staff in Britain and overseas to form a Royal Engineers Operating Company, the to train for two years and land on the beaches of Normandy' Dad landed on 8th July !944 and continued through to Holland almost till the end, he was home on 5th May 1945. Y list I think. So you can imagine how keen I am to see this book. Will keep you posted as to progress! Chris
I've just looked at Abe Books, and they don't seem to have a copy for sale. This is a pity for both of us, because I'd like to see what it's all about, too!
Thanks Scorer, I am having to be very patient, as I said I am in contact with someone who actually has a copy of the book, but he is not quite sure where it is! He asked me to hang on. I will be sure to post here if I get any news. . , and Phylo, I have checked the Railway societies events and it looks like I just missed one in October, I'm sure there will be more next year. Thanks for the advice, such a great site
Hi, Do you know which Railway Operating Company RE your father served with? I've got a war diary for one of them somewhere! Tom
Hi Tom thanks for your post. Dad was with 181 Railway Operating Company. I have already asked Andy to get this for me on his next visit to Kew, however I would be interested to know the size of this diary as I know that they do vary quite a lot as to the amount of info contained therein many thanks Chris
