After the Dunkirk evacuation the returning troops were short of weapons. 265 Battery were at Kirton armed with a 9.2 inch Railway gun in a siding. RHQ was in Swineshead Lincs. It would be interesting to see what this beast looked like and whether there were any others in use.
The weapon in question would most likely have been the Mark XIII railway gun. A number of marks of 9.2 guns were used on railway mounts in WWI. According to a site devoted to the Royal Canadian Artillery some Mark X guns on Mark III railway carriages may still have been around in WWII, but by the end of WWI the army had settled on the Mark XIII as standard. Unlike earlier 9.2 inch railway combinations the Mark XIII was a purpose built weapon and remained in army service after 1918 and through WWII. The attached image shows one in action in WWI.
