Hello, this is my first post here.By chance I jsut decided to put in the name of my Uncle, Henry Stennett into Google and was amazed that his name came up here. I can remember being taken as a small boy to visit his grave by my father in the early 1960's at a cemetry, ( location unknown) and have always wanted to go back to pay my respects but didn't know where to find it. Thanks to you I can now track it down. On my study wall I have his commemorative scroll and the letter of condolence from Buckingham Palace. So the information in your web page has been most informative. On a different topic , my father , William John Stennett was , I beleive a bomber pilot on Stirlings and Wellingtons with 214, 218, 149 squadrons before being posted to Egypt , Ismalia, as an instructor. I have certificate in his name saying that "by the King's Order" he was "mentioned in a dispatch for distinguished service in the London Gazette on 14th January 1944" . Could anyone out there help me with some basic guidance as to how I can find out why he was "mentioned" and the reason for it? Would any sort of record of this still exist? Thanks.
748968 W.J. Stennett, RAFVR appears in the London Gazette as mentioned. It's dated the 14th January, 1944 but was published 11 January, 1944 Viewing Page 305 of Issue 36329 Unfortunately, with Mentioned in Despatches there is no citation. The only way to find out would be if you still had your father's flying log and see if anything substantial is listed while on service with 214, 218 or 149 Squadrons before this date. If you do locate something then a trip to Kew to look at squadron Operations Record Books (all on microfilm) would be in order. Monthly summaries in the ORB are sometimes helpful as are Station Operations Records Books as well. Without knowing where your dad was serving when he was mentioned in despatches it's hard to provide any more advice. Good luck in your search
Pilot Relative welcome to the forum Im glad you found the information you required. The Grave of Aircraftman 2nd Class HENRY EUGENE STENNETT 747227, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on 06 October 1940 is located in the Commonwealth War Grave Section of Northwood Cemetery and is easily located. regards Clive
CL1 and Alieneyes, many thanks for your posts with very helpful information. I will try carrying out a search at Kew when I get a bit of time and will post any useful results that I find concerning the 'mentioned in dispatches'. I was once informed that because my father joined up as part of the RAF Volunteer Reserve and decided to retain his salary as a civil servant rather than take RAF pay, ( i.e he worked in the Post Office which was part of the civil service then) this precluded him taking a commission and he became "stuck" at Sergeant Pilot rank. As this is a non commissioned rank , then records are more difficult to track down. Anyway, I'll try my luck at Kew as a first step.

2008 - RAF Northolt; historical report & building survey (Defence Estates) quotes all its WW2 ORB entries for anyone interested. I began hosting all 24.9MB (350 pages) of it, as an agreed backup measure on 4Shared, in 2015 after the original link died. The inevitable cyber-security gotcha is that you now need to register as a 4Shared user (FoC) to download anything from there. And then, finally from local historian Catherine Kelter on a lighter note, I'm attaching one of my favourite transcripts ... Steve

Hi Clive. I just got wind of your update, c/o RSS, and popped in to see your belated 'like' of my post about DE's 2008 historical report - one oddity being its failure to identify this particular Ju88 and so proves me wrong about its completeness re important events. Not knowing your source, I checked and found the report to include 2 such autumn 1940 attacks: 25 Sep - p56 bullet point "i)"; "On September 25 1940, six bombs were dropped on the aerodrome by a single Ju 88 day-raider which dived out of the clouds overhead." p130 footnote 55; "On 25 September 1940 a bomb partially destroyed one barrack block, two landed between a pair of barrack blocks, one on the PAC line and another on the railway – no casualties." 6 Oct - p331 just says; "06-10-40 Hurricane L1684 damaged by enemy action. At 12.02 hours an enemy aircraft dived out of the clouds and dropped several HE bombs, one of which exploded about 30 feet from the Hurricane. The blast and falling debris damaged the aircraft." But my copy is "First Draft 18-02-08" and I've not checked for a later/final version. Steve

There was also collateral damage. My uncle George Lambert lived in Hillingdon and was Adjutant to 1083 Air Training corps Squadron. He was at home, carving the Sunday lunch and was hit by shrapnel from a Hurricane chasing the Germsan bomber. George is buried in the cemetery of Northolt Church.
