Last September I asked for help about my father Robert Hall Reid who joined 222 squadron in August 1943 and flew 112 sorties on his First Tour. I have his log books and a host of photos from his ITW through to flying Spitfires and Tempests onto Meteors and Vampires after the war. First of all thank you to the members who put me on the 'right road'. I have followed advice and pieced together so much. However, I am now at the end of the war and 222 squadron are in Quakenbruck, Germany from 20th April 1945 to the 3rd June 1945 and just celebrating VE. (A great account from National Archives AIR27-1372-51) I have two queries, the first is an abbreviation in his log book for HDT 1Destroyed 2 Damaged. What is an HDT? The second, my dad spoke of was that when they moved into Germany he was at a Concentration Camp after it had been liberated. Any ideas where this could have been? He did not go into any detail on this subject although he spoke freely about everything else. Thanks, Mike Reid
Mike, HDT: Horse Drawn Transport. Esterwegen concentration camp - Wikipedia less than 30 miles from Quakenbruck. Regards, Dave
This is the website of the Memorial Esterwegen, It will provide you with more Info on the history of those concentration camps (15 in total). While having a guided tour I understood that one of the camps (Aschernmoordorf) has been bombed by British planes in Apr 1945. English - Gedenkstätte Esterwegen Patrick
