My father was posted to Egypt in February 1941 as a Lt. Corp. I have his Service Number but am trying to find out what unit he was in and what role they played in the war in order to write a book for our family. Can anyone help?

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

Assuming your father was in the British Army you need to apply to MOD Glasgow for a copy of his service record. It will cost £30 - unless your mother is still alive in which case it will be free. It currently takes about 4 to 6 weeks for MOD to process an application.

Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

Once you have the records you will see which units he served with and you can then consider searching for the unit War Diaries.

    Good Luck.

    PS

If he was a POW or injured/wounded during his service post his name and service number as he may feature on the War Office official casualty lists now available on Findmypast.

Further to my last post, I should have mentioned my father's name C.G.S. Bennett and here are some photos that might help. He was a L/Corp. when he arrived in Cairo in Feb. 41, promoted to Corp. Jan. 42, commissioned 2nd Lt March 43, promoted to Lt. Sept 43 and to Captain Dec. 43. His Desert Star medal has an 8 on it. I am interested to find out what unit/s he was in and what they did during the war.

    Hi Norma
Then you will have a problem obtaining his service records. These documents are the only way of telling who he was with and when during his military career, and it seems he did well from your other post - R.A.O.C. Cairo, Egypt

The 8 on his Africa Star refers to 8th Army

If mods read this then perhaps they can combine the 2 threads to avoid future confusion and double postings

    Hi.
Perhaps you could share his service number as I have quite a few RAOC records and his name/number might pop up. I have already checked the RAOC honours and awards lists, including MiDs and there are a few Bennetts but none with his initials.
    Regards, John
