Hi all I'm currently in correspondence with a gentleman in Canada whose Great Uncle was a Canloan officer with the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, and who was awarded the Military Cross for his action during the attack on Venray/Venraij. He doesn't know anything about his service other than the award of the MC, which I've seen an extract of from the National Archives. I was going to suggest that he send off for his Great Uncle's service records, but I was unsure of whether they'd be held in Canada, or at Glasgow, or a combination of both? Can anyone assist?
He's Canadian & in Canadian Army, only 'loaned' to the UK. Info to send off for records here. What to Search: Topics - Canadian Genealogy Centre - Library and Archives Canada
Might be worth emailing the chap at bottom of this page . CANLOAN Army Officers Association Here's 3 Canloans with MC from East Yorks , which is your contacts Gt-Uncle? 267 Captain James R. Fetterley, M.C. [2nd posting of 2] 507 Lieutenant Gerald D. Hebb, M.C . 192 Captain Leonard B. Robertson, M.C.
I suppose the clue is in the title! Thanks Owen, great stuff, I'll pass it along. You may want to tell your Canadian friend that it will take about 7 months for the war records to arrive. Cheers Randy
Randy, would I be right in thinking they'd have two service numbers? Their original Canadian number & then their Canloan number.
Owen, Correct, but as long as Date of Birth, place of birth is given along with proof of death...obit, death certificate etc, the war records should be easily obtained. I would include both original service number and CANLOAN number when corresponding with the Archive branch. The Archives will acknowledge receipt of the request for war records and will provide a reference number....but the whole process could take up to seven months. Cheers from the colony, Randy
