    Hi all,

I have some questions on obtaining my Dad's service record and would appreciate any help you can give.

I know my Dad served in North Africa and possibly Italy. The problem is I only have his name, place of birth and that's about it. I don't even know his date of birth. He died in the mid 80's but I do not have a copy of his death certificate. I looked on the website for UK service records and one of the requirements for next of kin was a copy of a death certificate.

Based on the scant records that I have, does anybody think I would be able to obtain his service record?

    Thanks for your help!

If he died in the UK then PM his name and other birth details and I'll see what I can find for you to apply for a death cert.

You don't need a death cert but you will need to prove he is dead. You can send a copy of the invoice for the funeral or a photograph of his headstone as an alternative.

You will need either a date of birth and or a service number though.

Thanks for the responses and to Ross for providing me the information on my Dad. I've ordered a death cert and should get it within the next month, so I can then apply for my Dad's service record. By reading some of the other posts, it appears that service records take up to a year to get. Can anybody confirm that is correct?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Steve,

Some people get them within two months, but most appear to be taking 8 to 11 months.

    Be patient...

    Best,

    Steve.

    Hi Kopite

WHen I first applied for my Father's records, they only sent a summary (that is what they did over 10 years ago) I only found out a couple of years ago after being on this site that I could get the full records, so I wrote back and got them. Believe me it is worth the wait, and if you have a look around here, I have posted them as others have done so you can see what you get. Worth the wait!;)

    regards

    Robert
