I've driven all the ditches round Dunkirk trying to find if the Big 4 is still there. No luck so far.;)

    Question 7

Does anyone know the location of the BEF hospital at Dunkirk?

I was reading about it today and it is refered to as a Chateau. There is a rather moving account on how the orderlies drew straws from their RSM to decide who stayed with the wounded and who left on the last boat.

Andy, photos 3 and 5 look like the port railway station, where the train ferry sleeper service run to and from Dover. They moved the some of the port facilities in the 70s/80s to Gravelines to accomodate the bigger ferrys, still called it Dunkirk though. We used to go on the french crews bus into old Dunkerque with them from there when they built the new train ferry terminal.(freight only) .Derek

Andy - re buildings. There are some original buildings left in Dunkirk, but not many. The problem was not the destruction in 1940; there was much more destruction in 1944/45 when the German garrison held out. I think it's just a matter of going round with the images you have.

Re. medical facilities. These were numerous. The Maritime Hospital was used for obvious reasons, and a number of other buildings/châteaux along the coast were used as well.

    Cheers Derek,

Can you give me a name of a road in Dunkirk Via Google Earth if the area still exsists? I'll drive over there and check it out if you can.

    Regards
    Andy

    Cheers Paul,

Was there more than one Chateaux? The account describes it as being abandoned with no lighting for surgery (They used vehicle head lamps to light whatthey were using as an operating theatre) and there was no clean running water. Also lots of dead and wounded in the grounds waiting medical attention or burial.

    Regards
    Andy

    I think I'm getting closer:

I found this paragraph online in Dunkirk, Fight to the last man, Page 443

Has anyone (Owen) got the book that can look up what the '12' reference is? ;)

Rosendael returns quite a few places in Dunkirk.

    Cheers

Andy, it would help if you had the right page, it's on 445.
    :)
    note to 12 says..
    Newman's Report

which is by Major Philip Newman , brought to the author's attention by Newman's son.

On page 439 he mentions Chateau Rouge.

Andy - as I said above there were several locations used by the RAMC, and along the coast from Dunkirk to Nieuport (the full extent of the perimeter) there were several large houses/chateaux that were used, plus the Maritime Hopsital. What I believe is the chateau at Rosendael, is linked to in the GE place mark below.

Many thanks so far to all those of you have helped.

I've nearly finished the ground work of what I'm looking for just Nieuport to research.

    Question 8

Does anyone know where the Brickfields were/are near Nieuport?

About a mile due west of Ramscapelle (south of Nieupoort)....or ... about a mile due east of Nieupoort itself (about halfway down the canal between nieupoort and St.Georges (though these here were generally referred to as "The brickstacks")

    Dave.

**edit*** looking at satellite imagery, i think that this second area is now totally under-water because of later years development of the area.

Photo no.1 fascinates me. The amount of damage makes me think the area may have been cleared and redeveloped. Tried looking for prewar photos of Dunkirk but there are not that many, wiil keep on searching.
Andy do you realise that there are street views on Google Maps, drag and drop the little man in Dunkirk. I only just found it myself so bang goes the rest of the day for me.
If you do find the little square please bring us a picture and location back.Good luck with your trip whenever it may be.

    regards Richard.

    Hi Richard,

Cheers for your help. I was aware of the geezer (Owen found the Light House in an earlier thread using it plus a couple more WW2 shots that I'm not posting as I'm saving them for the 'Then and Nows'.

I cross over the Channel in three weeks by the way :D

    Question No.9

I was ready today that the BEF allocated a Corps to each of the following three beaches to be used for evacuation: La Panne, Bray Dunes and Malo-les-Basins. Does anyone know what Corps was allocated what beach?

    Cheers
