Is there a way of finding out where cemeteries are regarding the area you are going too?

Someone has just asked me what cemeteries I'm visiting on my next trip and I only know of two in the areas of France and Belgium that I'm visiting.

Is there a google application for example that overlays them on a map so you can see which ones are near where you are travelling.

    Cheers for any help.

Cheers Phil.....Not exactly what I was looking for but it's defo a start.

I wonder if CWGC should commision a book with them all listed on maps - Like a Atlas. I reckon they'd sell a fair few.

    Cheers Brendan,

Jim posted a link to it above (Another thread same subject) I'm wondering if it is like a trace you place over the map?

Ideally I'd like a AA European A-Z type book with them all marked in.....I can wish I suppose

The map is in the scale of 1:200,000, I know it's not the best and I fully agree with having one for europe but, it's still worth having in your arsenal.

    BTW - Who's Brenden?

The VdK produce (or at least they used to!) a series of Atlasses entitled "Am Rande der Strassen". Though they only really detail in text the german cemeteries, the locations of the war cemeteries of other nations were also marked... see below for an example section covering Dunkirk/Ypres... (purple spots are German cemeteries, green is French, orange is CWGC and blue are "other nationalities").

The French produced an atlas entitled "Atlas des Necropoles Nationales" focussing on just French cemeteries and the CWGC have the atlas detailed in a previous post. Also worth considering is a book entitled "Guide des Cimetieres Militaires en France" by Catherine Grive-Santini. Though nowhere near a complete listing, it takes detail from all three nationalities atlasses and also adds to it on occasion. In a way it's like a "Good Beer Guide" (similar size too!) to war cemeteries!!!

    anyway, the Vdk page....

...while I'm at it - German WW2 cemeteries in France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg (depending which side of the border they fell, most of the German dead for the areas you are visiting are now buried in either Bourdon near Amiens/Abbeville or Lommel in Belgium)...

...though WW1, you may also be interested to see this 1936 map of the area with a VdK overlay showing the locations of German cemeteries (and also CWGC cemeteries that have a large(ish) proportion of german burials contained within)... some of these were re-utilised in 1940.

something just occured to be regarding these atlasses... the CWGC (which recieves government funding) charges £7 for their atlas, the French atlas (produced for the ministere des Anciens Combattants et Victimes de Guerre - a government department) charges (going off memory) about £7 or £8 for theirs , yet the VdK - which is totally self sufficient and heavily reliant upon self-raised charitable donations - give/gave their atlasses out for FREE (including postage to the UK) !!! (though donations were always gratefully accepted).

Something ethically wrong there, I think!

The biggest cost issue with the CWGC book, which is why they charge, is that they are using Michelin maps which cost a fortune to use. I suspect a high percentage of profits will be going to them...

So do the VdK in their (free) France & Benelux volume of "Am rande der Strassen"...

Yes, I'd forgotten that. Wonder if they got a better deal as they are in the Eurozone?

So is the CWGC 'map' a book or an over lay that goes over a Michelin Map (Like a stensile) that you have to buy too?

It used to be an actual run-of -the mill michelin map that had the CWGc overlay printed on (with an extremely loseable photostat sheet included with the cemetery key)...I don't know whether they still print this version?...
