Hi, I hope that some kind soul will come to my aid. In my research I have come across two military acronyms that are eluding me, at least partially. 1) DF target, in terms of knocking out problematic resistance. My initial thoughts that this could be an artillery tern for 'Drum Fire Target' 2) Det Pro, in terms if an assault formation. Detachment something? Thanks for your help. Adrian.
1) Defensive Fire, probably, on a pre-registered target. 2) Detachment [of] Provost was my initial thought. If you can give a bit more context, someone may be able to refine them...
DF- Defensive Fire Targets. When a unit takes up a defensive position likley points that the enemy may use to attack from i.e.:,dead ground ,or a possible start line are selected and the units Mortars/artillery are registered on them .In the event of an attack fire can be brought down immediately without time consuming fire orders and ranging. Have not come across Det. Pro.
Hi, I was talking to a veteran this evening and he also mentioned defensive fire as an option. The 'DF target' reference came from a description of how counterattacks were handled across the Antwerp-Turnhout canal 'throughout the day counterattacks came in from the north and the east, and the KOYLI were at full stretch to contain them despite continuous DF targets being brought down' The Det pro reference is in relation to a formation within 147 Brigade of 49th Division in the same area that comprised the 11th RSF infantry division, 756 Field Coy RE, 143 Field Regt RA, 146 Field Ambulance and a Det Pro. Thanks, Adrian.
Thanks, DF seems to be settled. But forgive my ignorance what would Detachment of Provost mean in layman's terms? I really appreciate your help on this. For an amateur, navigating through the seas of military acronyms can be challenging!
Basicall, military police. In an assault situation, they might be acting as guides, traffic control, that sort of thing, as the unit assembles and forms up. The shopping list of units and formations you mention had a lot of sub-units and lots of vehicles - the provost would be trying to maintain, or create, order from the chaos.
