    Normal daily routine. R.C.s Church Service in Camp 5A NAAFI.
    Captain R.C. AIKENHEAD assumes command and financial responsibility for No. 2 Company with effect from 30 December 1947.

    No. 2 Company were beaten by 4 goals to 1 by H.Q. Company last ROYAL SUSSEX in the 2nd Round of the BRIGADE Minor Unit Knockout Football Competition.

    Sunday routine. Church Services held in the Garrison Church.
    The Battalion Football Team played GAZA Sub District and were beaten 6-0.
    The Battalion Rugby Team beat the ROYAL ENGINEERS 3-0.

    Routine as for Sunday. Church Services were held in the Garrison Church.

    Normal daily routine.
    The Advance Party left for ROSH PINNA at 0630 hours this morning arriving at 1530 hours.
    The camp which known as 210 Camp is being taken over from the TRANSJORDAN Frontier Force, who are withdrawing into TRANSJORDAN on and after the 15th of January 1948. The Camp is situated on a knoll overlooking Lake TIBERIAS and affording a splendid view of MOUNT HERMAN in SYRIA which is snow covered all the year around.

    Normal daily routine.
    The following message was received rom Brigadier J. BRODIE Commanding 61st LOR. INFANTRY BRIGADE. “I wish to say how extremely sorry I am that you are leaving the BRIGADE, during your stay with us I have been much impressed with the way the whole battalion has set about any job it was given. I am sure you will be as successful in your new job as you were in JERUSALEM. Thank you for all that you have done. The best of Luck to you and I look forward to meeting you again."

    1948 January 14
    Normal daily routine.
    The Battalion are engaged in striking tents and packing up, for their move to ROSH PINNA in the morning.

    1948 January 15
    The Battalion left for ROSH PINNA at 0630 hours arriving at 1600 hours, having stopped for lunch the other side of TULKARM.
    On arrival the Battalion was split up. Battalion H.Q. being at Camp No. 10 and No.s 1, 2, 3 Companies occupying Camp No. 280/281 which is approximately one and a half miles from Camp 10. Stores and kit were quickly unloaded and as there were no tents to be put up the Battalion were free to settle down for the night in quite a short time.
    The Battalion is now under Command of CRAFORCE for Ops and day to day Adm.

    Normal daily routine.
    No. 2 Company with a Mortar Platoon from Support Company took over duties from MIDDLESEX REGIMENT at SAFAD.

    Normal daily routine.
    A regretful incident occurred this evening when two armed vehicles went out to recover a three ton lorry which had broken down at AR RAMA. The vehicles were fired on and one of the drivers Guardsman SHELDRAKE was fatally wounded and died on the way to B.M.H. HAIFA.

    Commanding Officer inspected the Camps.
    The draft arrived comprising of 1 Officer and 88 Other Ranks.

    68 Group left for the Transit Camp HAIFA.
    S/Sergeant KAVANAGH was returning to Camp for HAIFA on the TIBERIAS Road at LUBIYA. They jumped into a ditch and stopped there from approximately 2330 hours till 0630 hours. The Police rescued them.

    Routine as for Sunday and Church Services.

    1948 February 2
    Normal daily routine.
    The Jewish settlement of EIN ZEITIM was attacked by Arabs. A Section of Carriers and a Troop of 17/21 LANCERS left SAFAD under Command of Captain D. LAMBERT went to investigate the incident. On the road down to EIN ZEITEM [sic] they ran into heavy fire, which they returned with Bren and Mortar fire. All was under control after two hours. A Lieutenant of the 17/21 LANCERS was slightly wounded in the left arm, and Guardsman CARROLL was slightly wounded behind the left ear.

    1948 February 3
    Normal daily routine. The Lightning Platoon was called out as Arabs had attacked a Jewish vehicle, the Lightning Platoon was fired on by Arabs, fire was returned with 2” Mortar fire. Arabs made off. A Carrier overturned near ROSH PINNA fatally injuring Guardsman KINNEALLY who died on the way to B.M.H. HAIFA and 3 other Guardsmen were injured Guardsmen QUAIL, MOODY and RIVERS. Sergeant SLAVIN was slightly injured.

    Normal daily routine.
    Lightning Platoon went out again to an incident near JUBB YOSEF. Enemy were fired on with 3” Mortar and they were last seen making for the SYRIAN border, Northern tip of Lake TIBERIAS. 6 SYRIANS were taken by the Lightning Platoon.

    1948 February 6
    Normal daily routine.
    EIN ZEITEM colony was again fired on at 1056 hours. The Carrier Platoon under Captain McCALL arrived and dispersed the enemy which were Arabs, by directing mortar HE at the high ground from which they had been firing. D.S.P. Mr BARHAM was wounded in the arm. Lieutenant T.A. HILL was killed when a 17/21 LANCERS armoured car overturned. Lieutenant HILL was on his way to BIRYA to collect a wounded Arab and bring him back to SAFAD. Two Jewish trucks were fired on by Arabs with LMGs and S.A. 1 Jew was killed and one wounded. A rescue party went out for the wounded Jew, the Arabs had cut off his arms and one ear.

    1948 February 7
    Normal daily routine.
    Jewish armoured vehicle was reported on the ROSH PINNA - SAFAD Road. A Carrier Platoon under Lieutenant MULHOLLAND established a road block on top of hill SAFAD. Platoon then went to BIR YAC and found the vehicle. Mr PYM brought the vehicle back to Battalion HQ. Two houses were blown up in SAFAD. Jews were suspected. Firing reported at AKBARA, patrol went out and saw approximately 20 Arabs which seemed to be armed, by the time this spot had been reached they could not be located.

    Two Jewish trucks were fired on, Lightning Platoon went out to incident, where they came under heavy fire. Platoon returned fire with 2” and 3” Mortars. The enemy made off leaving one wounded man. An electric primed mine was found in the roadway, ROYAL ENGINEERS dismantled it. It was reported that small bands of Arabs crossing the JORAN and making in direction of ROSH PINNA. A Platoon from Battalion HQ under command of Lieutenant CHURCHILL proceeded to area and opened fire and drove bands back over the SYRIAN border. One Arab casualty was left behind. A Platoon under Lieutenant WHITLEY were cut off at MISMAR HAY YARDEN MR 208268. A Platoon under command of the Commanding Officer relieved them both Platoons being under heavy fire all the time. Guardsman BALMER was killed in the action and Lance-Corporal HAGAN and Guardsman LOGAN were wounded. Four prisoners were taken in the day’s actions.

    1948 February 13
    Normal daily routine.
    The four prisoners were handed over to the Police at ROSH PINNA one being admitted to SAFAD Hospital. This man was rescued by 15 armed Arabs the same night. Battalion was visited by Lieutenant General G.H.A. MacMILLAN CB, CBE, DSO, MC, G.O.C. PALESTINE.

    1948 February 14
    Normal daily routine.
    Guardsman BALMER was buried at British Military Cemetery HAIFA.
    The Commanding Officer returned off leave. The G.O.C.’s car was fired on travelling North from ROSH PINNA, by Arabs dressed in civilian and khaki uniforms. Platoon engaged band with 3” mortar. The car was the G.O.C. of the PALESTINE Police.

    Early this morning at approximately 0200 hours the Jewish Cafe opposite the ROSH PINNA Police Station was badly damaged by an explosion, caused by unknown persons believed Arabs. Damage estimated at £1000. Jewish convoy fired on, Lightning Platoon went to their aid and arrived and came under fire, two grenades were thrown at them, they replied with 2” mortar fire and dispersed the enemy who were seen to be Arabs. One Guardsman was very slightly wounded by a grenade.

    Lieutenant Colonel H.D. PHILPOTTS M.C. visited the Battalion en route for home.

    Brigadier T. BRODIE visited the Battalion.

    The Regimental Band came down to entertain us.
    At 0600 hours Mr PYM with part of the Intelligence Section went to NEBI YUSHA, to investigate a report of the METULLA Police, on a Jewish convoy being ambushed with severe casualties. 3 being killed and 10 wounded. The band of Arabs that attacked them were 40-50 strong. The three that were killed were badly mutilated their heads had been battered in with either rocks or rifles.

    Sergeant SCOTT was proceeding to HAIFA with a three ton DODGE when they were fired on South of JUBB YOSEF by a band of Arabs. They returned the fire and he carried on until he was joined by a 17/21 DINGO coming from the opposite direction. Both vehicles returned to the source of the firing to find that the Arabs had dispersed. There were no casualties.

    Lieutenant Colonel H.C. STOCKWELL CB, CBE, DSO, visited the Battalion.

    Normal daily routine.
    The Battalion had an open invitation by the 17/21 LANCERS for the Hunters Trials at TIBERIAS, at which the Regimental Band attended.

    1948 February 29
    Routine as for Sunday. Church Services were held in both Camps.
    Whilst on his way to visit the Battalion Colonel W.N. GRAY DSO, MC, Inspector General of the PALESTINE Police was fired on near NEBI YUSEF. One of the constables was seriously wounded. The Lightning Platoon went out to the scene but found no evidence as to whom the attackers were.

    Brigadier G.H. COLGUHOUN visited the Battalion. The Pipers played for him.
    Carrier at SAFAD driven by Guardsman GILMAN drove into a shop. Lance-Sergeant HARRIS who was also in the Carrier was slightly injured in the head and was detained in HADASSAH Hospital SAFAD.

    Brigadier G.H. COLGUHOUN visited the Battalion. Guardsman PARKS whilst driving an 3 tone BEDFORED to SAFAD with 3rd DIVISION HQ Police clerks. The 3 Arabs held him up with a revolver and relieved him of his rifle. The last seen of the lorry it was making for the SYRIA border.

    Normal daily routine.
    Draft arrived with 3 Officers and 50 Other Ranks. Firing was reported on the ROSH PINNA - METULA Road. The Lightning Platoon went out to the incident. Nothing was found., the Lightning Platoon went into the village of QOBOA were between 60 to 70 SYRIANS appeared quite openly in the village, armed with three different types of French rifles.

    1948 March 13
    Normal daily routine.
    The Arab village of AL HUSEINYA was blown up and the Lightning Platoon under Captain BARNES were ordered to the spot, to find 12 to 15 houses demolished and the whole village a shamble. 12 Arabs were killed, 5 missing and 7 wounded. The attack on the village by the Jews was covered by 2” mortar fire. Some of the wounded was evacuated by the Platoon. No Jewish casualties were found. A big pack was found full of explosives and two unexploded grenades.

    Routine as for Sunday and Church Services.

    Normal daily routine.
    St. Patrick’s Day rehearsal had to be cancelled owing to heavy rainfall. Commanding Officer viewed the Air Strip to find a firm base to hold the Parade.

    Battalion with Regimental Band and Pipe Band rehearsed St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the Air Strip.

    1948 March 17
    ST. PATRICK’S DAY.
    Routine as for Sunday. The Battalion paraded on the Air Strip for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Owing to bad flying weather H.E. the High Commission could not attend to distribute the Shamrock. Lieutenant General G.H.A. MacMILLAN CB, CBE, DSO, MC, G.O.C. PALESTINE officiated in H.E.’s absence. The Battalion with the Regimental Band at the head marched passed the G.O.C. after the Shamrock was distributed. Holy Mass was celebrated at the Top Camp for the Battalion and the G.O.C. attended.

    Holy Mass was celebrated in the Top Camp 0930 and in the Lower camp at 1100 hours.
    Sergeant KNOWLES was stopped by approximately 60 armed Jews whilst evacuating 2 wounded Arabs away from scene of Road mine ourtrage as Jewish Armoured Bus where 5 Jews had been killed and two seriously injured on ROSH PINNA - SAFAD Road. Jews drove away with wounded Arabs, and although the area was searched thoroughly afterward they could not be found.

    Routine as for Sunday. Church of England Service was held in the NAAFI Lower Camp at 1800 hours. Holy Mass was again celebrated in all three Camps.
    Football match between Lower Camp and TP 1 AIRBORNE Squadron ROYAL ENGINEERS. Result Lower Camp 2 - RE 2.

    Routine as for Sunday. Holy Communion was held in the Lower Camp in the Mobile Church.

    QUARTERLY HISTORICAL REPORT of 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS for the quarter ending 30th June 1948.

    3. HOW EMPLOYED

    (a) ROSH PINNA
    Operational Duties. - The two main operations during the month of April were the withdrawal of No. 1 Company from SAFAD Town, and the evacuation of the Battalion from Camps 10 and 180 at ROSH PINNA to the enclave at HAIFA. During the evacuation of SAFAD, Support Company were engaged with some Arabs who started firing at random in the Town, and others who fired at a covering party of the Battalion who were on a hill on MOUNT CANAAN. The operation was successfully completed. The Battalion successfully withdrew into the HAIFA enclave with no losses and no casualties. The operation being completed on April 20th. During the month of April the Battalion was continually finding standing patrols on the various main roads to keep law and order between the Arabs and Jews.

    Guard Duties. -
    Apart from the normal guard duties in Camp there were no outside guards found by the Battalion.

    Training. -
    Owing to operational commitments it was not possible to carry out any form of serious training.


    (b) HAIFA
    Operational Duties. - The main operation during the month of May and the first fortnight in June was the evacuation of troops and stores from PALESTINE, other operations consisted of occasional static patrols on the main HAIFA - ATHLIT road, and No. 2 and No. 3 Company were both a detachment on MOUNT CARMEL. When the Battalion embarked on 15th for TRIPOLI, leaving behind a detachment of MT and Support Company, the final Battalion stores were loaded, and the original plan was to hand the camp over to the MUKTAR of ST. TIRA. However, when the rear party had embarked action were received from H.Q., 1 GUARDS BRIGADE to leave the camp empty and not to hand it over to anyone. This was done.

    Guard Duties. - Apart from the normal Guards in Camp, a detachment from No. 1 Company took over the Guard commitments from the 6 Field Regiment at ATHLIT, while the withdrawal from JERUSALEM was taking place. Apart from this, the Battalion found no outside Guards.

    Training. - Owing to the evacuation from PALESTINE no training took place.
    A certain amount of Drill was done.

    Recreational Training. - A swimming parade was held daily, and as many men as were clear of duty attended.


    (c) TRIPOLI
    Operational Duties. - These consist of maintaining a "Lightning Company" in Barracks, in case of civilian riots in the Old City. The Lightning Platoon of the Company were stationed in the CASTELLO for a few days at the end of June, but since then have not been called out. The Battalion is also responsible for "Desert Air Rescue" anywhere in TRIPOLITANIA, miles from TRIPOLI.

    Guard Duties. - Apart from normal barrack guards, the Battalion found a guard on a large flour dump at the docks for approximately a week. The Battalion also found guards at the "ALFA ROMEO" and "LANCIA" vehicle workshops to assist the R.E.M.E. There is a guards from the Battalion at KASALA Barracks guarding an R.E. Dump.

    Training. - Training has just begun and the following refresher courses are being run within the Battalion.
    1. Lance-Corporals - 4 weeks
    2. Sergeants and Lance-Sergeants - 3 weeks
    3. WT Course - 6 weeks
    4. Signal Course - 8 weeks
    5. Mortar Instruction Course - 6 weeks

    It is hoped to arrange an inter-company Drill competition in the near future.

    Recreational Training. - The following sports are being organised within the Battalion

    There are adequate facilities in TRIPOLI for all kinds of sport.

    Major-General J.C.O. MARRIOTT CVO, CB, DSO, MC, Commanding BRIGADE OF GUARDS, visited the Battalion and stopped overnight.

    Normal daily routine.
    Whilst escorting a water truck from FARRADIEH to SAFAD Lance-Sergeant TANSEY and Guardsman BYRNE were attacked and fired on. Both Sergeant TANSEY and BYRNE were wounded, BYRNE fatally. The vehicle stopped and 3 men wearing European dress approached and relieved the driver, who was unhurt, of his revolver and also the Bren and Sten of the escort.

    Firing broke out in SAFAD between the Arab and Jewish Quarters, and Guardsman REYNOLDS who was in a 15 cwt. on his way to join the SAFAD Company was fired on by Jews and wounded in both legs.

    Jews made a large scale attack on the SUQ Quarter of TIBERIAS and No. 3 Company supported by a Carrier Section entered the town to restore order. A curfew was imposed.

    No. 1 Company withdrew from SAFAD. The Arabs fired on covering troops and in ensuing battle 10 A.LA. were killed and 20 wounded. The Company suffered no casualties. Guardsman FITZGERALD and driver had to abandon the Battalion ambulance when fired on by Arabs on the SAFAD - ROSH PINNA Road. They were rescued by HAGANA and returned safely to Battalion H.Q.

    Guards of Honour found by 1st Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS and ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOs were at HAIFA docks in honour of the High Commissioner’s departure from PALESTINE. The Corps of Drums of the 1st Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS, 1st Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS and the Pipe Band of the 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS played at the dockside.
    A farewell dinner party in honour of H.E.’s departure was given on board H.M. Aircraft Carrier “OCEAN” and the Pipe Band played selections.

    A Guard of Honour was found by ROYAL ENGINEERS and the R.A.F. REGIMENT for the departure from PALESTINE of Major General STOCKWELL G.O.C. 6th AIRBORNE DIVISION. The band of the 17/21st LANCERS and the Pipe Band attended.

    Guard Duties. - Apart from normal Barrack guard duties the Battalion found guards at the ROYAL ENGINEERS dump at KALASA Barracks and are furnishing a guard for 595 ORDNANCE Depot whilst the 1st Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS carry out wet and dry training.

    Training. - Companies started a training programme in September which will finish on the 15th September. Combined Ops training is being carried out.

    The Battalion “A” Basketball team played H.Q. 1 INFANTRY DIVISION and were defeated by 12 points to 10 points.

    The Battalion Catchweight and Lightweight Tug-of-War teams pulled against the GRENADIER and COLDSTREAM GUARDS respectively, both teams winning.
    The Battalion three mile team were also successful in winning their race.

    The DIVISIONAL sports 3 mile was run at the Stadium at 1800 hours. This was won by the Battalion.
    The Battalion Catchweight Tug-of-War team pulled against the 1st Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS and beat them by two straight pulls. This brings them into the finals.

    Father CASEY left for EGYPT for a temporary posting.

    The DIVISIONAL Sports Meeting was held at the Stadium, TRIPOLI, resulting in an overwhelming win for the Battalion. All track events were won by the Battalion. Out of 13 events we were awarded 12 firsts dropping 4 points out of a possible 120. The Battalion Lightweight and Catchweight Tug-of-War teams won their respective weights also in the DIVISIONAL Sports.
    Position and points were as follows:-
    1st place, 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS 116 points;
    2nd place, 1st Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS 90 points;
    3rd place, 4/7 DRAGOON GUARDS 68 points;
    4th place, Divisional SIGNALS 45 points;
    5th place, 12 Anti-Tank Regiment, ROYAL ARTILLERY 44 points;
    6th place, Divisional Troops 43 points.
    The Tug-of-War and the mile medley did not count for points. The mile medley was also won by the Battalion.

    Guards and Duties. - Apart from normal Barracks Guard Duties the Battalion found Guards at the "ALFA ROMEO" and "LANCIA" R.E.M.E. Workshops. During the latter end of February the Battalion also found various outside duties while the GRENADIER GUARDS were in training.

    Training. - The Battalion has been on several BRIGADE schemes during the last quarter. Company training has also been carried out by the Companies.

    The Regimental Sergeant Major gave a lecture to the Battalion concerning the TROOPING OF THE COLOUR and MOUNTING OF KING’S GUARD on the Horse Guards Parade.

    The Major-General commanding 1st INFANTRY DIVISION visited the Battalion this morning, and was to have taken the salute at the March-Past. But owing to bad weather it was cancelled.

    The preliminary rounds of the DIVISIONAL Boxing Championships took place to-day at the gyms in Azzizia Barracks, commencing at 1430 hous.

    The Battalion Football Team met the 73rd H.A.A. at Seaview to-day, in the Semi-Final of Knockout Cup Competition. Result:- 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS 2 goals, 73rd H.A.A. Nil.

    1949 March 8
    This morning the Battalion was honoured with a visit by the Major-General Commanding the BRIGADE OF GUARDS. Major-General J.C.O. MARRIOTT, CB, CVO, DSO, MC. He watched the Battalion give a Rehearsal of “TROOPING THE COLOUR and the GUARD MOUNTING from the HORSE GUARDS”, on GIALO Football Ground. After the Parade the Major-General inspected the Barracks.

    Captain B.A.S. BARNES assumes Command and financial responsibility of No. 3 Company with effect from the 7th March 1949, from Captain The Viscount BOYLE.
    Captain E.C. WHITLEY assumes command and financial responsibility of Support Company with effect from the 9th March 1949, from Captain M.McN. BOYD.

    Padre’s Hour was held for Roman Catholics in the Education Centre of No. 1 Company Block at 1100 hours.

    Battalion Drill Parade at 0900 hours. The Parade which was a Rehearsal for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, took place in Barracks.
    The Battalion assembled in the Mess room at 1000 hours for a lecture by the Medical Officer.

    A Musketry Meeting was held in Second-in-Command’s Office.
    An All Ranks Dance was held in the Messroom commencing at 2000 hours.

    1949 March 17
    ST. PATRICK’s DAY.
    The St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place in Barracks at 0930 hours. The BRIGADE Commander, Brigadier G.F. JOHNSON, DSO, presented the Battalion with the Shamrock. After the parade the Battalion marched to the Cathedral for the St. Patrick’s Day Service.

    Battalion busy packing and getting ready for the move on Sunday (20th)

    1949 March 19
    The Battalion Football Team met the 39th Medium Regiment in the Final of the Major League Knockout Cup at the Stadium. Result:- 3-2 for the Battalion.

    1949 March 20
    This morning the Barracks were handed over to the 1st Battalion CAMERONS. The Battalion marched out of the Barracks at 1100 hours to the GURGI Transit Camp.

    1949 March 21
    Battalion spent the day getting settled in.

    1949 March 22
    The Commanding Officer inspected the Battalion lines.
