I am looking at a chap in 8 A&SH who were part of 36 Inf Bde, 78 Inf Div.

He is 2989100 Pte Sydney Smith and he came from SE Northumberland. I am puzzled why he would have become an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander.

Could one of the Wizards out there tell me if 2989100 came from the A&SH batch of Regt numbers or whether he was actually recruited into another Regt first - DLI or NF perhaps?

    Regards

    Frank

    Frank,

No doubt you knew the below but anyway:

    ยท Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders 2966001 - 3044000

    Amateur analyst corner:

3 other men with numbers around those of Private Smith (and who are listed by CWGC) were all from the north east. I'm sure others also.

Edit update: there are indeed a number of others from the north east on the CWGC roll.

    Private Sidney Robinson

    LSgt Wallace Snaith.
