Can anyone help with my research on the movements of my uncle Ray (who I am named after) and 9th Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment? All I know is that he fought and died in Burma. Extra details can be found here. Thanks Ray
Have you tried the Royal Sussex Regiment museum? http://www.eastbournemuseums.co.uk/redoubt/royal_sussex.htm Ryan
Just tried the website you recommended. There is a contact address, and apparently there is quite an extensive archive, including regimental diaries. I'll follow this up and let you know how I get on, but I think it may take a little longer than I anticipated. Thanks Ray
Hallo Ray, Have you seen The Shiny Ninth: History of 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment by Murray Gillings? It is available from A.C. 'Bert' Maile for £17, and Bert may remember him, so do write. I'm sure he'd be delighted to hear from you. His Address is: 54 Kirkgate Street, Walsoken, Wisbech, Cambs. PE13 3QZ. Regards Jon

Does anyone know if this book is still available from this address? There have been several posts here and on other sites, such as the Burma Star, all asking about this book and it's availability. It seems to be a very rare volume indeed, I am sure someone had arranged to borrow it through the library exchange scheme from a branch library in Sussex somewhere. East Grinstead seems to ring a bell! Something is in the air for the Shiny Ninth it would seem.
I have a feeling that I'm a bit too slow here, but I just remembered the battalion have an Old Comrades Association which is called the Pinwe Club. The Museum are bound to have details.

Re Murray Gillings Book, you can order it from your local library for a small fee. They will get a copy from Sussex. There was a sort of old comrades club.It was called The Pinwe Club but it folded up as all the members aged. There is a set of scrapbooks kept by the club that are now in the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester which anyone can read, along with several other useful bits of info about the shiny 9th
Does anyone know if this book is still available from this address? To those who have enquired about the Murray Gillings book 'The Shiny Ninth': The book is no longer available from A.C. 'Bert' Maile (B Coy) at Kirkgate Street, Wisbech, as he passed away in October 2007. He did however pass a number of copies on to the Royal Sussex Regiment Museum in 2006, and that is where I suggest anyone looking for the book should make enquiries. The 'Shiny Ninth' held their final re-union in 2008, in Eastbourne, however the following year there were arrangements made to link-up with the Royal Sussex annual re-union, though I am not sure if this happened. I hope this goes to help in some way to those who have been making enquiries. Though I know no more than this, and have no forwarding contacts to offer, I leave my email address for reference. david.maile@yahoo.co.uk Regards, David Maile, son of Bert Maile.
