Hi I have a photo of my Grandfather A Peake taken early in 1915. It shows that he is a Lance Corporal. His service record shows that his rank was Private until 29/2/1916 when he was appointed paid Lance Corporal.

However I have found a record on FMP.

It is a list of sick and wounded N.C.O's and men of the expeditionary force. List no. H1333 Preston Record Office.

    16955 L/Cpl Peake A 1-Lancasters sick 8th Sept 1915

This is definitely my Grandfather. Also the dates tally with the date he returned home

Anyone know if there would be a reason for the discrepancy in rank on his service record?

Unfortunately I can't attach any photos. My computer is misbehaving to say the least - can't access the internet, So I have to use my Husband's.
    Many thanks

    Diane

Do you know what unit he was in? Most of the WW1 war diaries are going online via the National Archives for a small fee.

Hi Drew. I have the war diary. It is quite riveting reading. He was in the 1st Battalion and was in France from 14/4/1915 until 7/9/15 when he was posted home.
    Cheers
