However, I did check the weekly return of the officers, as they are named.

Capt Williams was killed on the 4th October, but sadly the event was not recorded. (OH YES IT WAS). Luckily you have obtained better inforamtion and photos from elsewhere.

    Regards - Rob

I would guess "LF is " Lanchashire Fusiliers.

As to the Grave photo - only 4 names are recorded here (3 tin lids and 1 offrs service cap) That is definitely a Chianti bottle that had been upturned and contents empied into the grave - I imagine a final toast and a very nice gesture of respect to fallen comrades that has been deliberately recorded.

Yes they were attached to 2nd Bn Lancashire Fuslisiers.
Capt Williams, 4 other ranks were killed and 9 other ranks from the 11 Fd Amb section attached to 2 LF were wounded by shellfire .
The Divsional History on page 87 says On october 4th , the Lancashire Fusiliers and the Special Service Brigade were suffering from well-directed artillery and mortar fire , controlled by an enemy observation post still in Termoli's church tower..
See map I posted in post #9.

Here's a snippet of info I found in a report in the WD of 56 Recce Regt about the intensity of the enemy artillery fire and the OP in the church.

You are a star, greatly appreciated. But your wrong they are mention but not on 4rd Oct (as date on grave) but 5th. As far as I can make out it says
ADS had busy day in Termoli and were visited by CO. Capt Williams J O D and 4 ORs killed with light section attached.
A bit of a discrepiency between date and number of ORs killed but definately the right incident as Capt Williams is mention.
    Thank you very much.
