    Thanks for that, that Scotland side by side map should be good, we have a very similar one in my county - 'Cheshire tithe maps' which I use quite often.

    Unfortunately, Widnes was in Lancashire until about 1970 so that Cheshire site does not cover my old haunts.

    Ahh, that thorny issue...affects Warrington too. Were my children born in Lancashire or Cheshire they ask! :wacko:

    Whilst discussing historic / interesting web sites, another that is sometimes useful is 'Britain from above' - series of aerial photos taken around 1942, but probably no military installation views because of obvious reasons.
