Could you please take a look at the few lines of the service record I have attached and tell me what they mean? I think I have some of it worked out, but am not totally sure. This is what I have so far: Apptd A/ii/S/CDR (WOI) - Appointed acting/???/Sub??/Conductor (Warrant Officer Class I) Apptd A/Paid/S/CDR (WOI) - pretty much as above. Promoted WS/WOI (Suptg Clerk).....W/WOI - Promoted War Substantive Warrant Officer Class I (??? Clerk) Is this a supporting Clerk? I have seen this abbreviation on the net, but what did a Suptg Clerk do? ....??/WOI WS/Spt/Clk - War Substantive/???/Clerk Does anyone have any idea what the REMEMego1150 is? I guess that it was some sort of code for the formation of the REME. I have searched around for some time for the term, but not found anything that is similar. And could you tell me anything about these sort of crowns in the photo please? Thanks very much. Jules.
A WO 1 (Warrant Officer Class 1) would normally be a Chief Clerk if employed in that field. Its the same rank as a RSM (Regimental Segeant Major). The crowns depending on size will either be a WO2 or a Major.
Apptd A/ii/S/CDR (WOI) - Appointed acting/???/Sub??/Conductor (Warrant Officer Class I) Apptd A/Paid/S/CDR (WOI) - pretty much as above. I'd say, going by the second line that what you have transcribed as ii should be U - as in Unpaid. Natural progression from one to the other.
The First Badge is the Conductors Badge with the Arms enclosed in a Crest, the second is the normal WO1's badge there are futher variations seen ie if a WO1 is Extra Regimentally Employed.
The crowns must be for Major as there is no mention of WO2. The Major rank came some years later. I see the 'u' now. It really does help to get some fresh eyes to take a look doesn't it? Thanks everyone for your help again. Jules.
