Hello! Having always heard that my great grandfather played football during WW2 I was pleasantly surprised to find his discharge papers and photo of the football team recently. It seems in the photo that he is listed as l-Cpl Andrew Gerrie Wallace (Captain of team), the game football has on it '202 Section R.E.M.E 1943-44'. On his discharge papers (Feb 1946) it then lists him as Private AG Wallace no.765 1091-enlisted in Nov 1940. He is then listed as having served as part of the 10th Battalian, R.A.O.C. Was wondering if anyone can perhaps clarify why he seems to be playing football and not serving abroad. He was born in 1910, so wasn't 'old' when war broke out-no-one in my family actually knows anything about my great granddads military service-its always been the story that he just played football. Also why is he described as l-Cpl in one official photo and Private in his discharge papers? it says that his military service was 'exemplary' if that helps-he seems to have behaved himself. any help would be gratefully received Laurax
hey good luck with the research i would advice seeing if you can get the war diaries as they are invaluable reasource. as to going from lcpl to pvt this could have been volinteery step down, ive seen it in my grandfathers workshop detachment
