This photograph was taken c1900-1910. Can anybody please offer an opinion on the uniform? Is it Polish Or is it Russian?
Hi, I don’t know the answer but it can’t be a Polish uniform as the modern Polish nation wasn’t created until 1919 Treaty of Versailles if I remember correctly. EDIT TO ADD INFO FROM MY EXTENSIVE PERSONAL LIBRARY In 1795, Poland's territory was completely partitioned among the Kingdom of Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence as the Second Polish Republic in 1918 after World War I, but lost it in World War II through occupation by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Steve
As the photo was taken just a few years before WW1, a good place to post it is also: Great War Forum There are plenty of uniform experts there.
He is wearing a Feldmutze (Field cap) which says German but the Imperial army had a cockade not a badge. However Willamene Germany loved uniforms and for example many social clubs wore military style uniforms (for example drinking clubs student societies - often the same thing - choirs even).Ethnic German communities in the East (like those in cities like Lodz) were also prone to this
Thanks to everyone for responding. The reason for my request is that the man in the picture came from a Polish family but lived deep in Russian territory. He had 12 children and 11 of them were sons, one of whom fought for Poland and later the Polish forces in exile in Britain. Although they were all of military age I can find no record of them in the military. After being born and raised in Russia, they may have fought in the Russian forces.
Except these Original WWI Imperial Russian Dragoon Cavalry Cap I never said anything about dates just he looks Russian.
Found this of Russian soldiers in peakless cap. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f6/13/64/f61364d01b0c5243f334e2777c90545f.jpg
