I am looking for any information on my father-in-law Joseph Thorne Dunn who served with the Irish Guards (career soldier, last rank 1960s Sgt. Major) & was a POW in WWII in several camps in Germany and Poland including Stalag XXI-D Posen Poznan in Poland. We believe he was captured during the landings at Dunkirk in 1940. Any stories of him or stalag XXI-D will be very welcome. I am compiling a family tree on Ancestry & want to include information about Joe's war years. Thank you very much in anticipation. Josephine
We believe he was captured during the landings at Dunkirk in 1940. More likely captured at Boulogne with the 2nd Bn if captured in France. 1st Bn was in Norway in 1940. Neither BN anywhere near Dunkirk. (PS moved this to the POW section of the forum) EDIT: Diane listed IG pows here. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/irish-guards/39222-irish-guards-prisoners-war.html there are 2 J Dunne maybe a typo for Dunn ?? 2718336 130447 Sergeant J. Dunne Stlg 7a Moosburg An Der Isar, Bavaria, Germany 2718709 4429 Lance-Sergeant J. T. Dunne Stlg 383 Hohenfels, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany either of the Army Numbers look familiar ? PS Have you applied for his Service Records from the Irish Guards Regimental HQ in Wellington Barracks yet?
Josephine, here is a link with info on how to research a soldier, including one who was a POW, and farther down the page is the link for Irish Soldiers. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/47584-ww2-soldier-research-tips-links-new-researchers.html And the link for Irish Soldiers research and records. Not much else to add really other than this book if he was fighting in France during 1940 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boulogne-Battleground-Europe-Jon-Cooksey/dp/0850528143 You really need a copy of his service records to be sure of where he was and who with. Good luck Andy

T. Dunne Stlg 383 Hohenfels, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany Thanks Nick for this: 2718709 L/Sgt Joseph Thorne Dunn, Irish Guards, enlisted 13.3.37, captured Boulogne, France 25.5.40. This is the man I'm looking for & yes its a typo definitely the right man & definitely NO E at the end of Dunn. Camps XXIB Schubia, Poland IIIA Lukenwalde, Germany XXIC/2 Wolestein, Poland XXIE Gratz, Poland XXID Posen, Poland 383 Holenfeld?, Germany Now does anyone know where I can look for diaries or histories written by men in any of these camps please?

Military Archives | Info Centre | Defence Forces Wayne Would this only show WWII or before? And is it Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland as well? BTW Joseph Thorne Dunn was not Irish he just chose to join the Irish Guards. HOWEVER I am looking for James Armstrong who was a gunner & then Mess Commissaire Royal Artillery born September 1838/9 Ireland (no town or county known but assumed Northern Ireland due to joining a British regiment) died London 1899. He was married in London 1874 & this is the first I know of him & then was in Fermoy barracks 1878. Here is a link to his photograph in uniform. Maybe someone knows more than the Royal Artillery who could tell me nothing - not even the medal he is wearing. - Ancestry.co.uk Any hints would be great - I know its the wrong forum but don't know where to look i.e where may he have served as well as Ireland & then in London. I am also looking for Frederick James Salt Leicestershire Regiment No 203997, rank private but we think he was a batman. Conscripted about 1916. Victory & British medals. F/102.B.23/2808. but no details about which battalion he served with or where he may have been. He returned from war but separated from my grandmother in the 1920s. Again any hints would be welcome as the local museum are worse than useless. Thanks in anticipation.
Do you have a copy of Jon Cooksey's Boulogne? It's a must buy if you want to have an idea of what he was doing prior to capture. I have another IG book about a IG Sgt captured at Boulogne and his time as a POW but the name escapes me at the moment, I think his daughter may have wrote it. It has been posted on here as I wrote some stuff up on him (possible a citation IIRC) about him knocking out tanks I think. Use the forum's search engine and you should find a fair amount of stuff posted by me and dbf. I should be able to dig up some more stuff when I get home.
My IG contact has told me that your man served with the 1st Bn pre-war in Palestine and got a clasp for his campaign medal. And the book is called Sojourn in Silesia-Possibly by Evan but I've not checked yet.
I am looking for any information on Stalag XXI-D. Piotr What exactly is it you want to know? Did you have a relative who was there? If so, would you care to post some information so members can help you. Lesley
Don't know if this link can help you http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/prisoners-war/15156-stalag-no-s-locations-2.html Lesley
