Hi, Sorry to tag onto this thread, but thought it was probably the most efficient way of picking your collective brains!

I'm trying to find out a bit more about my Grandfather and the time he spent in a Japanese POW camp - all I have though is the backs of photos that were sent to him in the camp - does anyone know what camp Camp Y was in Java? I've been following so many threads and just getting lost! I can't find him on any lists of POWs online, so a bit baffled. His name was Herbert James Lindsey and any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Sonia

    Hi Sonia

I have only found a little bit so far, it would be helpful if you could tell us more. Was Army, RAF or Royal Navy

On the FEPOW database (which has POW release cards) - there this man from the RAF - the John maybe a typo
Surname: LINDSEY First Name(s): Herbert John Rank: A.C. 2/c Service No: 1264828 Service: AF Date of Capture: 08/03/1942 Unit: RIMU Held: Held Java, Singapore, Sumatra (Railway)
Also i have found that there was a Camp Y on Java

I will keep looking for more

    Sonia,

Keith and Stan have given you all the best places to look. The COFEPOW databse results previously shown:

    Record Details

    Surname: LINDSEY
    First Name(s): Herbert John
    Rank: A.C. 2/c
    Service No: 1264828
    Service: AF
    Date of Capture: 08/03/1942
    Unit: RIMU
Held: Held Java, Singapore, Sumatra (Railway)
    Died:
    Date:
    Buried:

These do mean that there is a Japanese Index card for Herbert (if this is indeed your man) and perhaps a liberation questionnaire also?

Both these documents would be held at the National Archives if they exist.

    Good luck

    Steve

    Sonia,

Is the Herbert John Lindsay found on the database likely to be your Grandfather? There are no cards actually on the COFEPOW website, you will need to search it out at the National Archives.

I don't know if this is the right case, but the International Red Cross may be of some help. They own such a large archive with many records concerning the former POWs - and for the next of kin, the research is totally free, while the other researchers have to pay 100 Swiss francs, about 90 Euros (!).

    Good luck with your search!

If the camp & its location is eventually identified, I am quite happy to take pics on my trip to Indo later on in the year

I have a camp Y in the city of Batavia, Java (now Jakarta). Unfortunately no name for the camp, and no absolute verification it was in Jakarta.

Thank you everyone that has contributed to this; my mum has verified some info - he definately was in the RAF and was at a training camp in Devon - my grandmother, dad and uncle were evacuated to be near him. He was a radio operator and my grandmother was informed that he was missing, presumed dead; which I'm assuming happened quite a lot. I'm continuing to piece some things together and will post again when I've got a fuller picture to share with you.

    Thanks again,
    Sonia

Sonia, funny coincidence, I've been conducting research for someone else regarding a POW.

Looks like your grandfather might have been in the same POW camp at Pakan Baroe. Well at least there's an A/C H J Lindsey listed in the camp in 1945.

I will be at the National Archives on Wednesday and can look for a POW card and Liberation questionnaire for you. See my website for more details: Arcre - Home

I have just found out via amazon, of all places, that the name of camp y was Boei Glodok. It is in a book called The Suez Maru atrocity: Justice denied! : the story of Lewis Jones, a victim of a WW2 Japanese hell-ship which details the journey of one man, till his death, through various camps, including the hell ships. I hope this is helpful to other people researching.

    Thanks,
    Sonia
