Does anyone know the numbers of men who escaped from the Hartsmanndorf camp, I am doing some research on Robert Banham who I believe may have escaped from this camp.

    Thanks

A little more information on the above Robert Banhan served with the East Yorkshire Regiment from a letter I have I believe he may have escaped with two others, this letter was sent after the war to Robert Banham from a German family who helped the escaped prisoners. I would like to know if there are any records on POWs and if there escapes were recorded ?.

    Thanks

    Hi Neil and welcome,

If he escaped he may have made a Escape and Evasion report when he got home. Not everyone did but there are records at the National Archives of all those available to view I believe.

I think there are a couple of members on here that have a significant amount of these reports. It maybe worth while editing 'Escape and Evasion Report' into the title to attract them otherwise they may miss this thread.

    Cheers

You do not give a date of his escape - I have checked my list of IS9 reports and Banham does not appear on that.
You cannot search the Escape and Evasion reports at TNA by name but there is a card index system that can assist/
I would suggest looking at Keith Janes' excellent website MI9 nos 1 to 499 where he has most of the MI9 (SPG) reports listed by number/name.
Once you have the E&E report number you can search for that reference at TNA.

    Good luck

    John,

Just had a look on Keith Janes website its excellent as you say. The letter I have was written by Bernhard Radtke from Chemnitz Germany on the 20th Aug 1946, he mentions Mr F brown and Mr CJ Curtis in the letter. There was a F brown ( L Cpl Coldstream guards ) and a CJ Curtis ( Drv RASC ) in the camp. I am unsure of the date of their escape.

    Thanks for your help
