If you have his full name and date of birth, you should be able to get his full Service Records from the MOD office in Glasgow. This will tell you just about everything about his entire service. You don't need to know his Regiment etc: just the information mentioned above.

I wonder if the cap badge is that of the Devonshire Regiment? [IMG]

Ok just read this in your first post - in order to obtain his service records you will need the documents from CL1's post 4 link to the MOD, and you will also need a copy of his death certificate

England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
    Name: John Walter Bowling
    Death Age: 71
    Birth Date: 10 Jun 1926
    Registration Date: Sep 1997
    Registration district: Sheffield
    Inferred County: South Yorkshire
    Register Number: C72A
    District and Subdistrict: 0481C

Contact the registrar at Sheffield registry and sort out a copy

My father was born John but became Jack just as your grandfather did

No post war is after the end of WW2. I have checked the Palestine 45-48 Roll and the only `Bowlings` are a 1st Herts C J Bowling and a REME J (altered to P ) Bowling Sorry service records first I think?
